    Family Tours of Hazard Alley Are Back!

    Here at The Safety Centre, we are all about empowering people through the life-saving safety skills and knowledge that we share on our tours. We are delighted to announce that Family Tours are back during this October Half Term!

    We are thrilled to be opening our doors once again, to welcome families to Hazard Alley to enjoy our fun and interactive educational tours which will take place on Monday 28th and Wednesday 30th October. Book your tickets here. To avoid disappointment, please book your tickets early for the chance to experience our famous Hazard Alley Tour!

    ** If you would like to come in a group please make one booking so that we can keep you together for your tour.**

    Family Tours At The Safety Centre

    Just like our school visits, you will be guided around each of our safety scenarios by one of our friendly volunteer guides. You will learn about the risks and potential dangers we face in every day life and the things you can do to keep yourself and your friends, family and community safe.

    From understanding the importance of smoke detectors and keeping your personal information safe to learning how to cross the road safely and how fast a train can travel, there will be lots for you to discover.

    Children will also get the incredible opportunity to make a practise 999 emergency phone call. During this call, they will need to remember what emergency service their require, where the accident has taken place and what has happened. An amazing skill that could save a life in a real emergency.

    Family tours are for children aged 6- 11 years old and their responsible adult aged 18 or over. Children must be accompanied by an adult for their tour of the centre.

    Facts and Info:

    Who is this tour for? Tours are for children aged between 6 years to 11 years and their responsible adult aged 18 or over who must accompany them during their tour. Adults are not able to attend the tours on their own without a child.

    Can we buy tickets for younger siblings? Unfortunately our centre does not have facilities for children under 6 years old or babies/toddlers. Our tours are designed for Primary School aged children in Years 2-6 (aged 6-11). Our safety scenarios are not suitable for younger children, who are under the age of 6 years old.

    Will the tour be suitable for older siblings over 11 years old? Our tours are designed for Primary School aged children between 6-11 years old only, so unfortunately older children are unable to attend.

    Where can I park? We have free onsite parking outside the front of our building. There is also an overflow carpark at the back of our building. If you are using this carpark, please walk around to the front of our centre by using the grey gate at the side of our building.

    Disabled access: Our centre is wheelchair friendly and we also have a disabled access toilet on site.

    We have a child with SEND. How will you support us during our tour? Please include any SEND information that you’d like our teams to be aware of when completing your booking. Our staff will seek to adapt your tour to ensure your group enjoys your visit to Hazard Alley. Please call our team on 01908 263009 to discuss any questions you have around your booking.

    What time do we need to arrive? Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of your tour to get settled into groups. You may be grouped with others depending on the size of your booking party. Groups will be made of 6 people.

    Can we bring dogs? The only animals permitted in the centre are guide dogs.

    Is there a café? Sadly we do not have a café on site. You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks to eat before the tour begins but you will not be able to take these with you into Hazard Alley.

    Is there somewhere to leave bags? Please only bring essential items with you, that you can carry into our education centre. We do have a briefing room where you can leave coats and drinks bottles but these will be left at your own risk. The Safety Centre Charity is unable to take responsibility for the loss of any personal items and valuables that you bring into the centre.

    Is there a gift shop? Yes! Gift bags range between £1 to £5 and can be purchased by cash or card.

    Do you have toilets? Yes we do. We have female and male toilets and a disabled toilet.

    Awards Update

    We’re excited to share that the Safety Centre has won the Thames Valley Business & Communities Awards  Charity of the Year award! This award celebrates the achievements of charities across Thames Valley and their impact across the region. Receiving regional recognition for our early intervention and prevention safety education work is an important moment for the Safety Centre.

    Chief Executive Maya Joseph-Hussain said,

    Winning the Thames Valley Business & Community Awards is a fantastic achievement for the Safety Centre. As we head towards 30 years of delivering lifesaving safety education, this recognition of our lifesaving work is so important. It’s recognition that our team of expert educators and inspiring volunteers are very proud of. Safety education is an essential life skill for young people and we’re excited to receive regional support and acknowledgement for our lifesaving work.

    Early Intervention & Prevention Safety Education

    The Safety Centre specialises in early intervention and prevention safety education. This work is designed to protect children, young people and adults across the Thames Valley and beyond. Empowering them with the tools and skills to make safe choices in everyday life and in emergency situations. Safety education is delivered into schools and at our immersive safety education centre Hazard Alley, based in Milton Keynes. Sessions delivered in primary and secondary schools focus on lifesaving topics, including knife crime, drug and alcohol safety and online safety across the South East and beyond.

    The 25th November marks White Ribbon Day. As a White Ribbon Accredited organisation the Safety Centre is working alongside White Ribbon UK to #ChangeTheStory. Supporting the global campaign to challenge behaviour and end men’s abuse and violence against women and girls. With the aim to stop violence before it starts. We do this in many ways with our focus of enabling men and boys to be changemakers.

    At the Safety Centre we have a team of White Ribbon male ‘Ambassadors’ and female ‘Champions’. They work to share the message that together, we can prevent violence against women and girls, building a better future together.

    What is the White Ribbon Campaign?

    The White Ribbon Campaign is an international campaign. It started in Canada after the École Polytechnique massacre, a tragic event that occurred on December 6, 1989, in Montreal. A gunman targeted women in the college, killing 14 female students and injuring several others. The attack was motivated by the perpetrator’s misogynistic beliefs.

    The White Ribbon Campaign launched in 1991, encouraging men to wear white ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to ending violence against women and promoting gender equality. The campaign quickly gained traction and has grown into an international movement, advocating for awareness, education, and action to eliminate all forms of violence directed at women. The white ribbon itself became a powerful emblem of solidarity and a visible pledge to stand against violence.

    The Statistics In The UK:

    • Nearly 1 in 4 girls in mixed sex schools have had experiences of unwanted sexual touching
      in school. (EVAW)
    • 6 in 10 women have felt harassed in the gym by a man. (The Gym-timidation Report)
    • 30% of women have experienced workplace harassment, with 81% reporting that they had
      been harassed by a man/men. (Government Equalities Office)
    • 1.7 million women experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2022. (ONS)

    How You Can Get Involved:

    • Wear a White Ribbon
    • Make the White Ribbon Promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women and girls. It takes 30 seconds and symbolises your personal commitment to #ChangeTheStory for women and girls.
    • Call out inappropriate language – use gender neutral language yourself.
    • Learn how to, and call out, sexist ‘banter’.
    • Make sure that you know how to signpost people to services, when appropriate.
    • Save the Domestic Abuse Helpline in your phone and signpost to it when needed.
    • Use social media and share White Ribbon UK’s posts with your followers.
    • Become a White Ribbon UK Ambassador or Champion
    • Consider whether your workplace could become White Ribbon Accredited or a Supporter Organisation

    White Ribbon Facts:

    1. The Symbolic White Ribbon: The white ribbon, worn prominently on the 25th November and throughout the year serves as a visual commitment to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women. It is a simple yet powerful gesture that unites people in a common cause.
    2. Raising Awareness: White Ribbon Day serves as a platform to educate communities about the prevalence of domestic violence and its devastating impact on individuals and society. Events, campaigns, and educational initiatives are organized to shine light on the signs of abuse, challenge stereotypes, and encourage open conversations.
    3. Empowering Through Education: Education plays a pivotal role in eradicating violence. By fostering awareness and understanding about healthy relationships, consent, and gender equality, we equip individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to break the cycle of abuse. Schools, workplaces, and communities can become hubs for education and change.
    4. Community Involvement: White Ribbon Day encourages community engagement and collaboration. It is a call to action for individuals, businesses, and organizations to work together in creating safe spaces, offering support to survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable. Community-driven initiatives contribute to building a society that values respect and equality.
    5. Breaking the Silence: One of the core principles of White Ribbon Day is breaking the silence surrounding domestic violence. It urges everyone to speak up against abuse, support survivors, and challenge harmful attitudes and behaviours. By fostering a culture of openness, we empower victims to seek help and create an environment where violence is not tolerated.

    Prices 

    Child tickets £22.50 (children aged 1- 17 years old). All under 18s must be accompanied by a paying adult. Activities will be suitable for children between 1-10 years but we welcome children of all ages to join in the fun.

    Adult tickets £5 (adult tickets can only be purchased with a child’s ticket)

    Babies in arms under 12 months £5 (must be purchased alongside an older child ticket).

    FAQs:

    Will there be food? No, there will be no food at this event.

    We recently learnt about Adam’s story after his mum, Helen, got in touch with us. 14 year old Adam visited the Safety Centre when he was in KS 2 and has just started year 10 this September.

    Helen told us how her mum was driving Adam and his younger sister in her car at the end of the summer holidays when they were in a car accident. Adam’s nan wasn’t able to get out of the car due to the impact of the accident.

    Helen said

    Adam remained calm, kept everyone else calm and called the emergency services. He said he knew exactly what to do from his trip to Hazard Alley all those years ago – so I wanted to say thank you to your team and to let you know the impact a visit to you has even years later.

    My 12 year old daughter… didn’t know how to respond to the situation because she didn’t get a trip to Hazard Alley due to the pandemic.

    Everyone was ok, a few bruises and shaken up. The car is not so good and will most likely be written off. Tell your team to keep doing what you do because it definitely has an impact.

    Adam’s story highlights the long term impact of the safety education we deliver here at our education centre Hazard Alley and out into schools across the region. We know that learning through doing is the best way to absorb life skills so we know what to do when situations arise. Every time a visitor makes a practice 999 call at Hazard Alley they’re preparing themselves for real life situations when they urgently need help. As Helen said, giving the confidence to know what to do and how to get help.

    Water safety education has been added into the national curriculum for primary students following the campaign of Beckie Ramsay whose son Dylan drowned from cold water shock in 2011

    Beckie Ramsay whose son Dylan drowned aged 13 from cold water shock has called the national network of Safety Centres teaching about water safety ‘essential for all young people to visit.’ Dylan drowned at Hill Top Quarry in Whittle-le-Woods, near Chorley, after getting into difficulty in the water when he was swimming with friends. The Safety Centre Alliance, a network of safety education charities across the country teach children and young people how to stay safe in daily life- including around the water. Beckie has been campaigning since Dylan’s death 12 years ago for water safety to be included in the national curriculum which has now been updated to teach about the dangers of the water.

    The Safety Centre Alliance was created to unite safety education charities across the country, delivering interactive, immersive safety education for children, young people and adults. The first charity was created in 1994 and the network inspires others from across the globe to spread safety education. Covering everyday safety topics from online safety, what to do in a house fire, crossing the road safely, water safety, how to call 999, first aid, the choices and consequences of knife crime, home safety, bullying and shoplifting and in car safety- visitors get safety skills that stay with them for life.

    Beckie Ramsay, Dylan’s mum said

    It’s truly amazing to finally see water safety being taken seriously over 12 years after losing my son Dylan to open water. As I’ve always said it is so important to learn about water safety, it’s as important as learning about the green cross code, stranger danger, fire and road safety. Learning could mean living! To know that many of these things and more are being taught under one roof at the Safety Centre and across the country through the Safety Centre Alliance is truly amazing. Had something like this been accessible to Dylan then just maybe my son would still be with us- about to celebrate his 26th birthday (17/10/2023) instead we will buy flowers and remember the good times. It’s essential for all young people to have this safety education.

    Beckie tragically has first-hand experience of what happens when our young people haven’t received key safety messages about the water. Cold water shock, rip tides and underwater currents are life threatening.  The Safety Centre Alliance works tirelessly to ensure visitors to our education centres are aware of the dangers of the water all year round and what to do in an emergency.

    Lives are being lost due to a lack of understanding about the dangers of the water- however beautiful the water looks- if you don’t have the knowledge about how to float, what to look out for or where its safe to swim, you could drown. The reality is specialist recovery teams are unlikely to make it in time if you get into difficulty in un-lifeguarded bodies of water before you drown. Others may enter the water to help you but they could drown too. We advise everyone to swim where there are lifeguards- at the beach or in the pool. No family wants to experience the horrific impact of losing a child like Beckie and the Alliance is doing all we can to stop this from happening.

    Every death, attack and sentence for young people acts as a stark reminder for the need for lifesaving knife crime education for our children and young people. We are calling on businesses, funders, organisations and individuals to fund our lifesaving knife crime education workshops teaching young people about the dangers and life changing consequences of being involved in knife crime.     We urgently need funding for our early intervention knife crime education work now. Our knife crime education workshops create safe spaces to speak with young people in an age-appropriate way to dispel myths and common misconceptions about carrying weapons and being involved in knife crime. There is no safe way to use, carry or participate in knife crime. Knives destroy lives for victims and perpetrators. We need funding for our knife crime workshops now to give children and young people the tools they need to make safe choices in the future.     When speaking with the Safety Centre Dr Stuart Lawrence, the younger brother of Stephen Lawrence who was violently murdered 30 years ago said ‘Early intervention is so important. Education can be the most powerful tool in the world and the earlier we can give people the tools to be safe, the more it helps. We need to explain to young people that time is precious, and life is precious. One fifth of knife crime is committed by 10–17-year-olds and there’s a lot more we can do early on to explain to children the importance of life and that there’s always an amicable way of solving things.’

    The Safety Centre’s knife crime safety education workshops have been designed for primary and secondary school students from the age of 9 upwards and are being delivered in schools across the South East and beyond. Sessions are tailored to match the learning age of the students, creating safe spaces for lifesaving conversations about knives and weapons. Sessions have been delivered to over 14,500 students across the region in the past two years but this early intervention work must continue now to help students make safe choices when it comes to the dangerous issue of knife crime, reducing the impact of crime and vulnerability.

    A donation of £10,000 would benefit over 1,400 children and young people. We are committed to ensuring we educate as many people as possible as the consequences of knife crime are devastating.     We’re Thrilled To Announce George Anson As Patron At The Safety Centre-Supporting Our Work To Keep Our Communities Safe

    We’re excited to introduce our Patron, George Anson, at a key time for the Safety Centre as we expand our essential safety education work across the region and beyond. George will help support the development of our charity as we move into our 30th year of operation, helping save lives through learning for children, young people and adults. During his time as High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire between 2021 and 2022 George campaigned to educate people on the risks they face online and how they can make themselves safer. His focus for his shrivel year was highlighting the impact of cyber-crime on the population. These interests align perfectly with the aims of the Safety Centre.

    George said

    In our ever-changing and increasingly complex world, how to be “safe” has never been more important to our children and young people. For nearly 30 years, the Safety Centre has been delivering this message effectively to that next generation. My role is to see that the Safety Centre continues to grow, prosper, and reach the widest audience possible. The only thing holding back the Safety Centre’s ambitions is funding. Everyone can help, whether you are an individual, organisation or business, by giving generously to make our world safer for the future.

    The tragic death of 16-year-old Jake Norman who recently died on the railway in Portsmouth highlights the need for the Safety Centre’s lifesaving railway safety education. Whilst the British Transport Police are still working to establish the circumstances of Jake’s death and why he was accessing the railway line, Jake’s family have said they would like to raise awareness of the dangers of the railway tracks through the tragic incident.

    The Safety Centre is the world’s first safety education charity, teaching lifesaving learning to children, young people and adults to create safe, flourishing communities. The charity focuses on early intervention and prevention safety education, teaching the skills needed to be safe in daily life.

    This month marks 30 years since the death of Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in a racist attack in London in 1993. In November 2022 Stephen Lawrence’s brother Dr Stuart Lawrence joined us at the Safety Centre to talk about the importance of our early intervention knife crime education programme to prevent future tragedies through learning. Our work here at the Safety Centre and across the region focuses on giving children, young people and adults the tools and knowledge to make safe choices and keep themselves, their communities and their futures’ safe. Our preventative education work helps build safe, flourishing communities today and tomorrow. However, this pioneering learning cannot carry on without the backing of funders and businesses to ensure the continued delivery of education sessions.

    We never know when a young person we know or a young person someone else knows will be affected by knife crime. One fifth of all knife crime is committed between the ages of 11 and 17. That’s why early intervention is so important, if we can get out into our communities, speak to our young people and let them know the consequences of knife crime. Its not the consequences of today, not tomorrow, not a few weeks time but these things go on for years. (2023) will be 30 years since the death of Stephen and not a day goes past when I don’t think to myself (my son) is missing out on an uncle… on cousins that he could have had. And this is all through someone’s perception that the way to deal with things is through violence. We are only in control of ourselves, that’s all we can control. we can’t control anyone else, we can inform and we can try to educate, it comes down to each and every one of us making our own decisions, our own actions and holding ourselves responsible for them.

    The Safety Centre’s Chief Executive Maya Joseph-Hussain said

    In the past two years we’ve educated 14,500 9-11 year olds about the challenging topic of knife crime in an age appropriate, tailored way. We want to continue to empower more children and young people to make positive, safe choices and reduce the impact of crime and vulnerability. Collectively our research shows some young people say that they carry a knife for protection or to make them feel safer, even though they wouldn’t think of using it. However, research has shown that you’re actually more likely to become a victim of crime if you’re carrying a knife. The Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice report, ‘Knife Crime Intervention – what works?’ said that current research suggests that education-based interventions hold the most promise for effectively addressing knife crime. Our early intervention education is the solution and we are here to help with prevention work at an early age to help young people make safe, lifesaving choices.     A visit to Hazard Alley provides students with life long learning through immersive education as students tour 11 purpose built safety scenarios. Each scenario is designed to educate visitors on current safety themes, in line with the PSHE curriculum helping students understand how to keep themselves and their communities safe every day.

    Safety Centre King Charles III Royal Visit

    The Safety Centre team was honoured to welcome HM King Charles to Milton Keynes this week when he joined local organisations at Christ The Cornerstone. HM King Charles spoke with our Chief Executive Maya Joseph-Hussain, our Chair of Trustees Catriona Morris and our volunteers Angie and Nick. They talked with the King about our work at the Safety Centre as the region’s leading and the world’s first safety education charity.

    We’re seeking swimmers for this year’s MK Rotary Swimathon

    The 2024 MK Rotary Swimathon takes place on Saturday 24th February at Wolverton Swimming Pool. We’d love to hear from all enthusiastic swimmers who can help us by swimming lengths helping us raise funds for our lifesaving work. All funds raised will go towards supporting our lifesaving safety education work. Money raised during the 2024 Swimathon will help to refurbish and modernise our “Online Safety” scenario, which is much in need of an upgrade, to ensure everyone stays safe when online, reducing the risk of bullying, grooming and exploitation.

    How do I get Involved In The 2024 Swimathon?

    What: Swimming lengths as part of a team of 6 swimmers raising money for the Safety Centre. Entry is free.
    Where: Wolverton Swimming Pool, Addington Ave, Wolverton, Milton Keynes MK12 5GH
    When: Saturday 24th February 2023 11am-11.55pm with optional lunch with the team afterwards

    Merry Christmas from all of us here at the Safety Centre. We hope that you have a wonderful festive period and a happy and safe new year. 

    This year has been full of action for the whole Safety Centre team, from increased visitor numbers at our education centre Hazard Alley to new projects. We’ve been thrilled to welcome students from across the region to our education centre as schools get back out for school trips and were so pleased to be featured in the winter edition of the School Travel Organiser Magazine. We also welcomed Dr Stuart Lawrence to the centre in November to talk about the importance of our knife crime education work and how we can save lives through education.

    Our education team have been busy delivering early intervention knife crime education to 1,500 students across Milton Keynes this December during the month of action whilst the Knife Angel is in the city. This exciting project will continue in the new year as our education teams travel onto Slough to deliver education to 1,950 children.

    In December we’ve celebrated all things Christmas, thanking our volunteers for their amazing work, with our volunteer Christmas party. As well as our Christmas staff day out wreath making. We made the centre Christmas ready and had a visit from cheeky elves, who needed lots of safety education!
