  • New Roadworks Safety Scenario Launched

This week is the official launch of our latest roadworks safety scenario at our education centre Hazard Alley. The scenario developed in partnership with Ringway– the highway maintenance strategic service partner for Milton Keynes City Council.

The new scenario gives visitors the opportunity to discover the potential dangers of roadworks: how to keep safe by understanding site hazards; and the importance of following site rules like designated pedestrian routes and safe crossing locations. It includes an interactive quiz and for a fully immersive experience visitors get to wear Personal Protective Equipment.

The Roadworks Safety Scenario launches this month to join our education centre’s lifesaving learning programme including first aid, safe places to cross, shoplifting and bullying, fire safety, home safety, the choices and consequences of knife crime, in car, cycling and railway safety as well as water safety. The education centre is designed for primary school children and young people to learn how to keep themselves and others safe in daily life.

Clive Rillstone, Ringway Regional Director said-

“Our team are passionate about raising the positive profile of the highways industry, particularly the safety of both road users and site staff, and we were excited to have the opportunity to develop the scenario at Hazard Alley. We feel that our scenario makes a perfect addition to the aims of the Safety Centre with reference to road works and safe crossing.”

Maya Joseph-Hussain CEO of the Safety Centre said

“We’re thrilled to be launching our new innovative roadwork safety scenario that has been developed in partnership with our supporters Ringway. The scenario adds value to our pioneering safety education centre Hazard Alley, where children, young people and adults across the region have the opportunity to learn lifesaving safety education in a safe, immersive way”.

With thousands of visitors per year visiting Hazard Alley, Ringway will continue to work with the team at the Safety Centre to ensure that this initiative is an effective way to understand site safety.

Schools and uniformed groups can see this new scenario by booking to visit Hazard Alley here. Sessions start at £7.50 + VAT per student. Book your session here today.

The tragic death of 16-year-old Jake Norman who recently died on the railway in Portsmouth highlights the need for the Safety Centre’s lifesaving railway safety education. Whilst the British Transport Police are still working to establish the circumstances of Jake’s death and why he was accessing the railway line, Jake’s family have said they would like to raise awareness of the dangers of the railway tracks through the tragic incident.

The Safety Centre is the world’s first safety education charity, teaching lifesaving learning to children, young people and adults to create safe, flourishing communities. The charity focuses on early intervention and prevention safety education, teaching the skills needed to be safe in daily life.

Maya Joseph-Hussain Chief Executive at the Safety Centre said,

‘We were saddened to hear of the tragic death of Jake Norman and our thoughts are with his family, friends and community at this difficult time. Jake’s death emphasises the importance of our railway safety education work here at the Safety Centre. Our immersive education centre Hazard Alley teaches visitors about the dangers you come across when using the railways and how you can use the railways safely. This education work is essential to keep our communities safe as they go about their daily life, today and in the future.’

The Safety Centre offers immersive education safety tours and classroom sessions at our education centre Hazard Alley in Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes, as well as outreach education in schools for students, teachers and parents. We provide high quality interactive, immersive, experiential, and memorable safety education and training to children, young people and adults across the region.

Established in 1992 and opened in 1994 the Safety Centre is the region’s leading and the world’s first interactive, immersive, and memorable safety education charity. Specialising in teaching children, young people and adults about how to stay safe, understand risks and avoid accidents using realistic learning experiences. The Safety Centre charity is highlighting the dangers of winter weather as temperatures fall across the region. Following the tragic news earlier this week of four three young boys dying after falling through ice in Solihull, the charity is speaking about the daily dangers we face in colder weather.

The safety education charity based in Milton Keynes, focuses on teaching children, young people and adults how to stay safe in daily life situations. This includes staying safe during the winter months. Since it opened in 1994 the Safety Centre has educated over 400,000 children across the region. Children, young people and adults are taught safety education at Hazard Alley, the charity’s immersive, engaging scenario-based education centre as well as out in the community in schools across the region.

From being careful around bodies of water and not walking or skating on them, even when they appear to be frozen solid, to understanding it can take longer for vehicles to stop on icy roads there are lots of things to consider when the temperature drops.

Sarah Surridge, Marketing and Communications Manager said:

“The weather is beautiful at this time of year but also very unforgiving. It’s important that we take the time to think about the situations we may encounter and discuss the ways we can keep ourselves and our communities safe. Coming together for conversations about water safety particularly with children and young people, in the light of this week’s devastating news, can save a life. All bodies of water can be dangerous at any time of year but during the winter frozen water is particularly risky. We are all so sorry to hear of the loss of life this week and encourage parents and guardians to speak to children and young people about the dangers around bodies of water.”

The Safety Centre, based in Milton Keynes is open for visitors from schools as well as delivering education sessions into schools across the region for students, teachers and parents. Volunteers Treated To Wonderful Thank You Lunch For Teaching Life-Saving Learning At Safety Centre

Volunteers for the Safety Centre were celebrated today for their dedication to teaching life-saving learning. Throughout the year, children, young people and adults have benefitted from their guidance and knowledge. They always leave our interactive centre educated, inspired and full of excitement, and that is all because of our incredible volunteers.

Our volunteers are at the heart of our work, as the world’s first and the regions leading safety education charity. Volunteers lead tours around our education centre Hazard Alley, which is visited every year by thousands of children, young people and adults from far and wide.

This last academic year alone, our guides volunteered over 2600 hours to teach life-saving skills and knowledge – a truly fantastic number for our first year back since COVID19.

We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this and our volunteers than by throwing a huge Thank You lunch, filled with tasty treats and fun party games. It was a great day with the same buzz of excitement we hear from everyone who visits our fantastic centre.

    Meet Anthony!

Here at The Safety Centre we talk a lot about how amazing our volunteers are, so it is only fitting that we introduce you to one – Say hello to Anthony, who has been part of The Safety Centre family for over 8 years.

    Safety Centre Hazard Alley Volunteering

He is a Milton Keynes resident who generously and wholeheartedly shares his time and wealth of experience with our visitors.

In 2014 Anthony’s wife, Frances, mentioned a poster she’d seen about safety for children and the rest as they say, is history. Anthony has volunteered at the Safety Centre for 8 years, and in the past year alone has volunteered over 150 hours of his time, teaching children, young people and adults life saving learning.

Anthony’s career as a chartered civil engineer included spending years in Saudi Arabia in challenging desert conditions. Back home, he was responsible for the design and construction of a section of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow. Then came along the EU requirement that UK road bridges must be strong enough to carry 44 tonne lorries. Anthony was in charge of the assessment/strengthening of bridges over the railway for Transport for London and LU. He has also given presentations at international conferences.

    Favourite Scenario

Anthony’s favourite scenario is the Coop, where we talk about core PSHE topics of living in the wider world. This scenario focuses on bullying, shoplifting and who you can turn to for help if you need it.

    Anthony said

‘If the children can remember one or two incidents and what to do, that’s great. Some children have never seen a phone box before and they’re amazed there’s a real person at the end of the phone. The centre is always moving with the times and developing to meet changing safety needs within our communities, like the development of the new knife crime scenario.’

In his spare time Anthony enjoys playing guitar with his church music group. He also enjoys sailing, gliding and karate. With lots of hobbies and experiences Anthony is always learning – from playing the violin, to scuba diving and flying and training young pilots there’s never a dull moment. He is also very dedicated to his two grandsons, who are his and Frances’s top priority.

So, what is Anthony’s advice to anyone thinking about volunteering?

I, as a volunteer, appreciate the training and encouragement the staff provide. Not all organisations offer the same level of support.

Come and have a taster and see what you think.  Its not for everyone but if you like it you’ll be hooked.
