Safety Centre Celebrates 30th Birthday With Launch Of Violence Against Women And Girls Programme For 20,000 School Children

Celebrating 30 Years Of Lifesaving Learning With VAWG Programme

The Safety Centre charity is launching a pioneering Violence Against Women & Girls Education programme to celebrate its 30th year of delivering lifesaving safety education. The safety education charity, which specialises in immersive interactive safety education, will deliver the pilot programme to over 20,000 11-13 year olds over the next 3 years and is seeking support from national funders to expand the programme across the UK, educating more young people on this vital subject.

The programme will ensure that children, young people, their parents and teachers recognise the importance of equity, respect and personal safety. Helping to create a culture of positive behaviours amongst young people, enabling students to discuss what’s acceptable, and how to react if they see something they know isn’t right.

The Safety Centre has received £98,170 from the Milton Keynes Community Foundation to pilot this project in Milton Keynes. The charity is seeking additional support from regional and national funders to deliver the programme into schools across the country.

Maya Joseph-Hussain CEO of the Safety Centre said,

‘We’re excited to announce the launch of our new Violence Against Women & Girls safety education programme for primary and secondary school students. This education programme will create an empowered community to have courageous conversations, increasing their understanding of the individual impact of their actions, which can make a big difference in their communities and wider society and support women and girls for years to come. As a White Ribbon accredited organisation the Safety Centre is committed to supporting and empowering young people across the country to understand the risks around Violence Against Women & Girls, for victims and perpetrators.

We’d like to thank Milton Keynes Community Foundation for their support funding this project with a three-year strategic grant, enabling us to empower local children. We hope the charity’s investment in our safety education work in our hometown will inspire other funders to support us educating children across the country. We are launching a fundraising appeal to ensure we are here for children and young people today and in the future. Without ongoing support children and young people will miss out on education that could save their lives.’

The charity is also celebrating 30 years of lifesaving learning, delivering safety education to children, young people and adults. The charity started in January 1994 with its interactive safety education centre, the first in the world, Hazard Alley which still operates today. The charity works to create safe flourishing communities for the future, teaching children, young people and adults safety skills for everyday life and emergency situations.

    Support The Safety Centre

We’re calling on businesses and individuals to support our work to ensure that safety education can continue for children today and in the future. Support our work here.

    Celebrating Our Volunteers

It’s Volunteers Week and we’re celebrating our volunteers and everything they do for us here at our education centre Hazard Alley to bring safety education to life!

    Volunteers Week Safety Centre

2023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week  and we’re joining thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK. With this year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ we hope to encourage people to be the change that we want to see and get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them. The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering, so taking the time during Volunteers’ Week to celebrate their efforts and all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector and society as a whole has never been more important.

We’ve been speaking with our volunteers to find out more about why they volunteer with us and why it matters to them. Volunteers at the Safety Centre support our work by helping deliver our safety education tours in Hazard Alley as well as answering the telephone for our 999 emergency practice calls.

    Meet Our Volunteer Johnathan

This is Johnathan, he’s our Volunteer Rep and he represents the volunteers here at the Safety Centre. He tells us a bit more about why he volunteers and what it means to him:

    Safety Centre Volunteers Week

Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Jonathan Needham. I was born in the Midlands, moving to Milton Keynes in 1971. After leaving school I did an apprenticeship as an electrician for five years and then worked on the railway for 30 years in various roles before I retired. My interests outside of volunteering are fishing, playing outdoor bowls, pool and more recently gardening.

What brought you to The Safety Centre?

My youngest daughter sadly died suddenly in June 2014, I had already retired from work but my wife was still working. She wanted me to have something more to do during the day when a work colleague of hers who was already a volunteer at the Centre suggested I come and see if volunteering at the centre would be something I was interested in, especially with my knowledge of railway safety.

I was invited to do a tour and this really helped me decide to give volunteering at The safety Centre a try, the rest as they say is history!

How long have you been volunteering at The Safety Centre?

I started volunteering in November 2014 (eight and a half years now) and soon became the go to person for various DIY jobs with my friend Colin who has recently returned as a Telephone Guide.

What drew you to applying for the Volunteer Representative Role?

I feel I have now gained enough experience as a volunteer to be able to advise/mentor other guides and new volunteers. I am hoping that they feel they can approach me about any issues or concerns they have.
I also feel I can confidently help in promoting the good work The Safety centre does in various ways as required.

Do you feel volunteering at The Safety Centre is a rewarding experience?

I find my volunteering has become a rewarding experience. Each group I take round can have different challenges but seeing the looks on the faces of children as they go round the centre, telling you they have enjoyed one particular thing or the whole tour or that it’s the best trip ever is priceless.

    Meet Our Volunteer Coordinator Tracy

    Safety Centre Tracy Volunteer Coordinator

Tracy manages our volunteers and ensures they have everything they need to help deliver our lifesaving learning here at our education centre Hazard Alley. She tells us about her role and why the volunteers are so special.

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Tracy and I am the Volunteer & Office Coordinator at The safety Centre (Hazard Alley). When I am not here I can usually be found either singing with my choir or in the stands of a football ground watching my son.

    What is your Role?

My main role is to recruit, train and retain the Volunteers here at the safety Centre, but the role is so much more than that. The volunteers here are amazing! I get to spend time talking with them and generally just making sure they are alright. The volunteers love to come in early and sit and have a cuppa and a chat with each other and the camaraderie between them is lovely.

Do you feel volunteering at The Safety Centre is a rewarding experience?

Definitely, I have seen people flourish here at The Safety Centre. The confidence that it gives you and the interaction with the children is extremely rewarding. It also has a very social element to it where you can always find someone to talk to or ask advice from.

Anything else you would like to add?

Hazard Alley Volunteers are amazing last month alone they gave 286 hours of their time to help educate young people on keeping themselves safe. I am extremely fortunate to be able to come in everyday and spend my time with such inspirational and dedicated volunteers.

Introducing Our Chair Of Trustees Catriona Morris

As we head into 2023 we’re highlighting the work of our amazing trustees who support our charity the Safety Centre, the world’s first and the region’s leading safety education charity. Catriona Morris is our Chair of Trustees. In her role Catriona leads the Board of Trustees and supports the running of the Safety Centre Charity. Catriona joined the board in 2017 after being introduced to our organisation through her role as a Milton Keynes councillor for Linford South and latterly Broughton Ward, when she was a member of the Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Fire Authority. She was also the Mayor of Milton Keynes in 2012. When she’s not at the Safety Centre Catriona is a magistrate and sits on the Buckinghamshire bench. She lives in Milton Keynes with her family.

    Catriona shared:

When I was on the Fire Authority I learnt all about the Safety Centre and saw the value of early intervention education and I was enthused by that. I’m a parent to two children and wanted to do everything possible to give young people the tools to keep themselves safe. It’s vital that every child has the opportunity to learn lifesaving safety education and I wanted to be part of the organisation delivering it.

I love coming into the centre and hearing the excited voices in the building with children clearly learning by osmosis. Knowing that we’re teaching such valuable information that’s in depth and varied that supports the school curriculum and the ever-changing environments our young people live in is wonderful. For example, the recently developed knife crime choices and consequences education initiative. It’s great to be part of an organisation that’s ready and has the expertise to create education programmes and support children, young people and adults when new and emerging safety issues come up. Such as when the building site scenario was closed as safety around building sites improved across the country. We’re now moving onto the upcoming new scenario which will be launched next year around road safety when there are roadworks taking place, which we’re seeing a lot as our towns and cities grow.  When we hear tragic news stories about children and young people having accidents on our roads it highlights how important our work is to teach children how to cross the road safely. This education is fundamental to society and everyone has something to learn when they visit the Safety Centre or use our outreach programmes, whatever their age we can help. We are the solution here. When the community has a problem they come to the Safety Centre for support. That’s why our amazing education teams, volunteers and partnerships are key, as they enable us to keep on top of pressing safety issues our wider communities face.

It’s important that we keep spreading the word about our work and role within the local community and wider region. Everyone who has been to the Safety Centre talks about it and it is now our role to reach out to people who haven’t heard about our work to see how we can support their needs. From school teachers, to Scout leaders, businesses and organisations we have safety education for everyone. Unfortunately, our work arises from tragedy as we develop scenarios to meet the needs of society. We continue to adapt and develop our offering as situations develop and will always be here for our communities.

The Safety Centre has committed to working to end men’s violence against women by becoming White Ribbon Accredited. As an Accredited organisation, the Safety Centre will develop and deliver a comprehensive Action Plan to change the cultures that lead to abuse and violence and promote gender equality.

White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people, and especially men and boys, to individually and collectively take action and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence. White Ribbon Charity – Working To End Men’s Violence Against Women

White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people, especially men and boys to individually and collectively take action and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence. To wear a white ribbon is to promise to never commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women.

White Ribbon UK is part of the global White Ribbon movement to end men’s violence against women and is the leading charity that is ending men’s violence against women by engaging with men and boys to make a stand against violence. White Ribbon works with individuals, organisations, and policy makers towards wholesale culture change to prevent violence before it starts.

Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK said

White Ribbon Accredited organisations are able to make a real difference towards ending violence against women by promoting a culture of respect and equality, among their staff and wider communities. By raising awareness among employees, people can learn how to become allies and call out violent and abuse behaviour when they see it, at work and in the wider community. We are delighted to welcome The Safety Centre Charity as one of our White Ribbon Accredited organisations and are looking forward to working with them towards ending violence against women once and for all.

Stuart Lawrence Speaks At The Safety Centre About Empowering Children & Young People With Lifesaving Knife Crime Education

Today we were thrilled to welcome Dr Stuart Lawrence, the younger brother of Stephen Lawrence, to our centre today. He spoke about the vital importance of promoting early intervention knife crime education across the region and beyond through the Safety Centre Charity, the region’s leading and the world’s first safety education charity. Stuart shared his story, experiences and messages of hope and tolerance. We were also joined by Assistant Chief Constable Katy Barrow-Grint from Thames Valley police talking about knife crime and how Thames Valley police is preparing for the Knife Angel coming to Milton Keynes this December.

The Importance of Knife Crime Safety Education

We were excited to invite Dr Lawrence to talk with community leaders from across the region about the vital importance of early intervention knife crime education. Our role to support the development of flourishing communities within our region and beyond starts by responding to emerging safety trends. Unfortunately, knife crime is now an issue that children and young people need to be able to understand from an early age. This is why we’ve developed our early intervention knife crime safety education initiative in schools and at our education centre Hazard Alley. The programme talks about the choices young people have and the impact of these choices. Our education specialists create safe spaces for life saving conversations and education, in a meaningful, sensitive, age-appropriate way.

    Dr Lawrence said:

“Early intervention is so important, at the end of the day the only person you can control is you and you need to have the tools to make safe choices. Education can be the most powerful tool in the world and the earlier we can give people the tools to be safe, the more it helps. We need to explain to young people that time is precious, and life is precious. One fifth of knife crime is committed by 10-17 year olds and there’s a lot more we can do early on to explain to children the importance of life and that there’s always an amicable way of solving things.”

Assistant Chief Constable from Thames Valley Police Katy Barrow-Grint said:

“Seven out of the eleven murders in Thames Valley in the last year have come about because of a knife. I’m sure you’ll agree with me enough is enough. The preservation of life and working to address root causes and helping to save lives from being lost to violence but the wider impact in our communities and offenders themselves must be integral to everything we do as a partnership.”

Maya, Chief Executive of the Safety Centre said:

“We’re delighted to be joined by Dr Stuart Lawrence to talk about his experiences and the vital role the Safety Centre plays in educating children and young people through our early knife crime intervention programme. This education initiative can save lives through creating safe spaces for impactful immersive learning and vital conversations about the consequences of being involved in knife crime. These conversations and sessions are potentially lifesaving and I’m proud to be leading a team of education specialists delivering pioneering safety education across our region.”

    Devastating Online Safety News

Recent news headlines about the heartache felt by families like Archie Battersbee and Molly Russel affected by the devastating impact of deadly social media challenges and resources, highlights the ongoing need for safety education for children and young people as they navigate the online world. Online challenges like the blackout challenge Archie Battersbee is believed to be copying, have been in the news recently as parents, carers & support networks of children and young people become aware of the dangers of online content readily available to young people. Sadly reports like this make the need for early online safety education for children and young people even more vital. With nearly 60% of children aged 3-15 using social media, their ability to safely navigate the internet is essential.

    Online Safety Education

At the Safety Centre Charity, which has been running for 28 years, our highly trained and experienced education team work with primary aged children in an age appropriate and sensitive way, creating safe spaces for complicated topics like online safety education. Walking young people through the dangers of being online, how to protect your personal data, how strangers can reach out to you on online platforms, what it means to be a cyber bully and how important it is to speak with people you trust about anything you see online that you don’t think is right like dangerous online challenges. This potentially life saving safety education, which is tailored for different primary age groups empowers young people to use and enjoy the internet in a safe way.

Safety Centre Charity Hazard Alley Online Safety Education

Sarah Marketing Manager at the Safety Centre said, ‘As we increasingly welcome devices into our daily lives, unavoidably children and young people have access at an earlier age to online content which can be dangerous, inappropriate and occasionally deadly. The horrific experiences of Archie and Molly’s family’s highlight the vital importance of online safety education for children and young people as they grow up with technology. Our online safety education programmes delivered at our education centre Hazard Alley and in schools across the region are lifesaving tools for primary students to help them manage and enjoy their online experiences whilst keeping themselves and their friends safe.’

Community Action MK have Emergency First Aid Training at Safety Centre, Hazard Alley

First aid training is essential for all businesses, organisations and education providers to help manage potential risks and safeguarding people. Knowing how to perform just one first aid technique can make a huge difference when it comes to saving a person’s life.

At The Safety Centre,  we educate children, young people and adults so that they have the knowledge and skills to empower them to make safer choices. This week, we had the pleasure of teaching Community Action MK all of the necessary skills and knowledge required for emergency first aid situations.

Under the guidance of Carol, one of our incredible trainers, the team practised cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an AED on our laerdal resuscitation mannequins. They then moved on to practising the recovery position and dressing open wounds, using each other as casualties. With a hint of humour and a lots of great advice, the day was filled with engaged attendees who left the centre equipped with the necessary skills to help support their colleagues.

Josan Race, Community Development Manager from Community Action MK said

The centre is a lovely venue with lots of space. The trainer is fantastic and the parking is great!

    Back To School Safety

We’re talking about back to school safety this week, as children and families prepare to go back to school.

Whether you are starting somewhere new or returning for another year, our top safety tips and advice are there to help support you as you kick start the new academic year.

    Walking To School

Our roads may be safer than they were a few years ago, but it doesn’t change how important it is to learn about road safety, especially when we are walking to school for the first time by ourselves.

The latest changes to the Highway Code make pedestrians a priority at crossings, including junctions, before cyclists, horse riders and cars. However, as we always say at the Safety Centre, even if we are being safe, it does not mean that everyone around us is being safe. Accidents can still happen, and according to RoSPA, 39 fatal accidents on the road in 2019 were children aged 15 and under.

So, if you are planning to walk to school make sure to:

    Plan Your Route To School

Planning your route is a great way of finding the quickest and safest way to school. You can locate where the road crossings are, as well as avoid the places that you shouldn’t cross. Once you have planned your route, we also recommend that you practise it with a parent or carer. This can help you feel more confident and avoid making unsafe decisions.

Look For Multiple Ways To Get To School

Sometimes, the route we would normally take might be cut off due to road repairs or even accidents. In cases such as this, we would have to find an alternative path to get to school. Unexpected events like this can cause us to feel worried or stressed, which may lead to us making unsafe decisions. By practising multiple routes, you will always have another option.

    Stay Bright, Stay Seen

Wearing bright clothing makes it easier for all road users to see you, especially when you are walking home after school. Whilst school uniforms are usually dark in colour, there are other bright things we could wear, such as a coat or bag.  You can add bright accessories, such as a reflective keyring or strap to your bag. It might not seem like much, but this can make all the difference.

    Be Free From Distractions

In order to cross the road safely, we need to use our eyes and ears. If we are too busy looking at our phones or listening to music, we may miss oncoming danger. Stay free from distractions and get to school safely.

    Create a Hand…..A Helping Hand

There can be times when you feel sad, worried or stressed about things that are happening at home or school. In times such as these it is important to tell someone.

At the Safety Centre, we call this the Helping Hand. Your thumb represents yourself, as there are times when we can fix the problem. However, if it is something we need help with, each finger on our hand represents a group of adults you could turn to.

Why not take the time to think about who you would include on your hand? If you aren’t too sure, why not check out some our examples below to help give you an idea.

    Index Finger

The index finger represents adults you would find at home. This could be your mum, dad or carer. You might even live with an adult brother or sister.

    Middle Finger

The middle finger refers to people in our wider family, such as our grandparents, uncles and aunties. This can also include any adult cousins that you are close to.

    Ring Finger

Your ring finger finger includes any adult you feel you can trust at school. It could be a teacher, teaching assistant, headteacher or lunchtime supervisor.

    Little Finger

The last, but certainly not least, little finger represents any other adults that you know. It could be your friend’s parents, a neighbour or activity leader.

If you are not able to reach anyone face to face, Childline is there online or on the phone, all day, everyday.

Remember, there is nothing so awful that you cannot talk to someone about it. If you feel that you are not being heard, keep trying until someone listens to you.

Safety Centre Hazard Alley Helping Hand

    The Power Of Saying No

No might seem like an easy word to say but we don’t always feel like we can, especially when it comes to our friends.

Friendships are really important to us and it is only natural that we want to fit in, but it is also important to recognise when this might lead to unsafe choices and negative consequences.

We may not realise it but our friends can influence us, shaping the way we behave and make decisions. Changing the way we think, feel or act in order to fit in with or make a person or group of people happy is known as peer pressure. This isn’t always bad as they could help to change your view of a situation to make it more positive, but there are occasions when it can be.

When we are in situations where friends are encouraging us to do something that makes us uncomfortable or that we know is wrong, it can be difficult to know what to do. Especially if the rest of your friends are doing it. You may feel worried that by not joining in you might loose your friends or be the target for bullying. These feelings are very common, but there are steps you can take to help you. Remember, it is never ok to fit in with people at the expense of harming yourself or others.

Think! Is The Choice I’m About To Make Right Or Wrong?

There will be times when this is more obvious than others, but that won’t make it any less difficult. Our bodies are often very helpful in these situations with sending out early warning signs, such as an increased heart beat, shaking and feeling sick. These appear when we are scared or nervous and are there to tell us that the situation we are in might not be safe.

We can also ask ourselves how this choice will affect:

    • Ourselves
    • Our future
    • Our family
    • The people around us
    • Our community

If any of the above would be affected in a negative way due to a choice that we would make, it can help to give us the confidence to say No.

    Walk Away

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is walk away from the situation. It is easier if others join you, but don’t let this stop you if they don’t.

    Use Your Helping Hand

Think about the people you could tell. They will be able to help you make the right decision, or open up a safe space for you to relay your concerns with your friends.

Month Of Action Against Violent Crime In Milton Keynes Creates Early Intervention Knife Crime Education Opportunities With The Safety Centre Charity

This December there will be a month of action against violent crime in Milton Keynes, and the Safety Centre Charity, the region’s leading safety education charity, is thrilled to be supporting this initiative through their expertise in early intervention knife crime education. Working closely with Thames Valley Police, MK Council and MK Dons SET the Safety Centre will be providing education opportunities for young people and parents. Creating safe spaces to talk about the choices and consequences of being involved in knife crime through their early intervention knife crime programmes.

Thames Valley Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner have announced that the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression, known as the Knife Angel will be coming to Milton Keynes at the end of the year as part of a month of action against violent crime this December. Based at the Stadium MK the monument was created by the British Ironwork Centre and designed by sculptor Alfie Bradley, made of over 100,000 knives. The knives were collected through a nationwide knife amnesty supported by police forces across the country and the Home Office. The monument was created to highlight the impact of knife crime on people, families and communities.

Opportunities For Open Communications About The Choices And Consequences Of Knife Crime

The Knife Angel provides an opportunity for the people of Milton Keynes, and the city’s visitors from further afield to talk about knife crime and knives, why people carry them and the life changing impact they can have. The Safety Centre Charity, the world’s first safety education charity was created to teach children, young people and adults how to stay safe in daily life. The charity’s pioneering education programme has developed as the risks we face in daily life have evolved. Visits to their education centre Hazard Alley now include early intervention knife crime education as well as early intervention knife crime outreach sessions in schools across the region. The centre which is Learning Outside the Classroom certified, has an exceptional education team who are trained to talk about knife crime and the choices and consequences of carrying weapons in a safe, age appropriate way. The education team is looking forward to sharing their expertise during the month of action this December.

    Pioneering Safety Education

Sarah Surridge, Marketing and Communications Manager at the Safety Centre Charity said

‘As the world’s first safety education charity the Safety Centre are pioneers in safety education, including knife crime. As we adapt to the changing world we live in we’ve introduced early intervention knife crime education for all our year 5 and 6 visitors to our education centre in Kiln Farm Milton Keynes. This is in addition to our outreach programmes in schools delivering knife crime education to school students, talking about the choices young people have and the consequences of their choices, which are potentially far reaching and life changing. The Safety Centre is excited to be part of this important education opportunity with the Knife Angel coming to Milton Keynes and will be creating safe spaces for potentially life saving conversations about knife crime and it’s consequences. We look forward to working with Thames Valley Police, MK Council and MK Dons SET to deliver this vital education.’

The Safety Centre Charity Is Here For Your Life Saving Learning

The Safety Centre Charity was thrilled to educate over 14,000 children, young people and adults with life-saving learning since reopening after the pandemic. The charity based in Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes is the regions leading safety education charity. The Safety Centre education team are ready and excited to welcome students and visitors to their education centre Hazard Alley for the next academic year!

New Early Intervention Knife Crime Education Programme & Scenario

Last year the Safety Centre launched their new choices and consequences education scenario. This new scenario has children focus on their choices and the consequences of these choices in relation to littering, graffiti and knife crime, funded by Safer MK and MK Development Partnership. This alongside the brand new Choices and Consequences: Early Knife Crime Intervention classroom session, available for primary school children in year five and six, has been a really well received addition to our already life-saving curriculum.

We encourage schools to book our sessions early, so speak to our education team on 01908 263009 to book your year five and six students in school sessions for next academic year.

    Fantastic End Of Year Results!

Last academic year the Safety Centre Charity taught over 14,000 children, young people and adults life-saving education. This has either been through tours at our education centre, sessions in schools as part of our outreach programme or first aid and fire marshal training, which is available for both schools and companies to book.

Amy Lawrence, Bookings and Marketing Assistant at the Safety Centre Charity said

‘We believe that education empowers people to make safer choices and could not be happier with the way this first year back has gone. We cannot wait to see what the next year will bring.’

To find out more about visiting Hazard Alley, having a school outreach session, or training your employees with us head to our website for further details and how to book.

    Incredible Volunteers!

As always, our incredible guides are at the heart of our work at Hazard Alley, educating young people about staying safe in everyday situations. The amazing team dedicated over 2,600 hours last year to teaching life-saving education.

The Safety Centre is always looking for more volunteers to join their amazing team! If you have 2.5 hours free in your week, why not volunteer with us and save a child’s life? Full training given and travel expenses paid. Contact us on 01908 263009 or email volunteerguides@safetycentre.co.uk to find out more. We would love to hear from you!

Last Night The Safety Centre Hosted A Networking Event With Over 80 People From Collaborate MK

The networkers learnt more about our work at the Safety Centre Charity and how we support businesses across the region with training and venue hire. They also had the opportunity to explore our immersive education centre Hazard Alley and experience our safety scenarios. If this wasn’t enough for a busy networking event, there was a fire marshal interactive demonstration putting out real fires, and first aid emergency training from our in house trainer Dr AJ Yates from AJMH Limited.

Enjoyable Networking At The Safety Centre

The night was a huge success and introduced people from across the city of Milton Keynes and beyond to the vital life saving work of the Safety Centre Charity.

Sarah Surridge, Marketing & Communications Manager at the Safety Centre Charity said

“We love sharing our life saving work with our community and connections across our region. It was wonderful to talk to the fantastic Collaborate MK networking community about how we can help them as businesses.

We’re often remembered for our immersive education centre, Hazard Alley. But for businesses we have a lot to offer. From first aid, fire marshal, and mental health training to an unusual team building day location. We’ve got something for every organisation. You can hire our conference or meeting rooms to spark conversations and ideas in new environments. Events like tonight showcase the flexibility of our centre and we look forward to welcoming more businesses to the Safety Centre Charity in the future.”

Tim Lee, Director of Collaborate MK said

“ It was a pleasure to hold our Monthly Collaborate MK event at Safety Centre Hazard Alley. We were treated to an excellent Fire Safety Display along with great interactive networking breakout sessions within the room sets and locations. We look forward to returning next year.”

The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire Debbie Brock attended a school knife crime prevention session this week delivered by the Safety Centre Charity. The session provided by the Safety Centre’s education team, taught year 6 students at Brooklands Farm School, Countess Way Campus about the dangers and consequences of carrying a knife.

Debbie Brock is Buckinghamshire’s High Sheriff, a post appointed by the Queen. She is one of 55 High Sheriff’s representing the Queen across the counties of England and Wales. She is keen to support initiatives that prevent crime and help build strong communities.

The Safety Centre Charity works closely with schools across our region. These vital relationships enable the charity to deliver early intervention knife crime sessions helping children and young people understand the impact of their decisions around carrying knives and weapons.

Debbie Brock, High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire said ‘I am so impressed by the session and the sensitive way Kathryn took the young people through the content. I was also really impressed by Brooklands Farm Primary School and their headteacher’.

Maya Joseph-Hussain, CEO of the Safety Centre Charity said ‘We’re so pleased to showcase our vital knife crime prevention school outreach sessions to the High Sheriff Debbie Brock this week. Our amazing education team have delivered over 130 knife crime sessions this past year to over 3700 students. I encourage schools across Milton Keynes and the wider region to book this ever popular and essential session for their students.’

    Amazing Donation

Milton Keynes company Personal Group‘s charitable trust has supported the Safety Centre Charity’s life saving work this week with an amazing £10,000. The company’s charitable trust has donated this money to deliver the Safety Centre’s in school knife crime prevention sessions to 1,200 year six students in our MK schools.  It will also support the Safety Centre Charity’s vital safety education delivered at their immersive education centre Hazard Alley.

    Donations Supporting Lifesaving Work

As knife crime continues to be a safety issue for our communities The Safety Centre team are passionate about delivering imaginative and engaging early intervention sessions. The in school sessions help young people understand the impact of their choices around carrying a knife. They also give young people a safe space to talk about what’s going on in their worlds and how their decisions around carrying a weapon can change their futures and the lives of their friends, families and communities.

The PACT Committee said ‘When we discussed the Safety Centre Charity’s Knife Crime Prevention Initiative it was a unanimous decision to take this forward.  As a local business, many of Personal Group’s staff are MK residents who are very aware of the challenges being faced currently. Bringing support and education to local students is key in helping to reverse this worrying trend and we are very pleased to be funding and working with the Safety Centre Charity and their immersive education centre Hazard Alley.’

Maya Joseph-Hussain, CEO of the Safety Centre Charity said ‘We’re thrilled to receive this donation from the Personal Group’s charitable trust. Donations like this help us support more children and young people across our region, delivering life saving learning. Every student receiving a session has the opportunity to talk about knife crime in a safe, supportive way, without judgement and with time for important discussions. Thank you to Personal Group’s charitable trust for supporting our life saving work.

We’re reaching out to our communities to ensure this lifesaving learning continues for generations to come. If your business would like to be part of this journey contact us to talk about you can help save lives across our region.’

Contact the Safety Centre today on 01908 263009 bookings@safetycentre.co.uk to speak to us about how your business can get involved in supporting the Safety Centre Charity, or to arrange a knife crime prevention session in your school or to book your school’s next visit to Hazard Alley. Ofcom’s latest report Online Nation, released this week, finds the internet isn’t always safe for our young people. A third of children aged 8-15 who go online have seen worrying or upsetting content online in the past 12 month. With nearly 60% of children aged 3-15 using social media, Ofcom’s findings are highly concerning. The report highlights the importance of the online safety training the Safety Centre Charity provides across the region’s schools and in its Milton Keynes immersive learning centre Hazard Alley.

    Online Safety Training Facts

A third of children aged 8-15 shared that they’ve seen something worrying or nasty online in the past 12 months. Giving children and young people the tools to protect themselves online and report harmful content is essential. Especially as Ofcom found that 40% of parents allow their children to use social media platforms under the recommended age limits.

The Safety Centre Charity provides online safety training for school children and young people directly into schools and in their immersive education centre Hazard Alley. From tackling safe user names and passwords to talking about what to do if you see something nasty that worries you. The Charity’s age tailored sessions empower students to safely manage their online spaces and give them the tools and confidence to report damaging content they find online.

Maya Joseph-Hussain, CEO of the Safety Centre Charity said ‘Helping young children stay safe online and giving them the confidence to report harmful content is essential. With thousands of students receiving our in-school online safety sessions and over 10,000 students visiting our centre every year, we have a responsibility to give young people the confidence to manage their online experiences. Its concerning to learn that 83% of young people aren’t reporting harmful content when they see it. We need to empower young people with the tools and confidence to report damaging content in their online spaces, so they can enjoy the internet in a safe, age-appropriate way.’

How To Report Harmful Content Online

Anyone who has seen harmful content online can report it using the report harmful content website or visit the CEOP website or speak to Childline for advice 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
