Volunteers Treated To Wonderful Thank You Lunch For Teaching Life-Saving Learning At Safety Centre

Volunteers for the Safety Centre were celebrated today for their dedication to teaching life-saving learning. Throughout the year, children, young people and adults have benefitted from their guidance and knowledge. They always leave our interactive centre educated, inspired and full of excitement, and that is all because of our incredible volunteers.

Our volunteers are at the heart of our work, as the world’s first and the regions leading safety education charity. Volunteers lead tours around our education centre Hazard Alley, which is visited every year by thousands of children, young people and adults from far and wide.

This last academic year alone, our guides volunteered over 2600 hours to teach life-saving skills and knowledge – a truly fantastic number for our first year back since COVID19.

We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this and our volunteers than by throwing a huge Thank You lunch, filled with tasty treats and fun party games. It was a great day with the same buzz of excitement we hear from everyone who visits our fantastic centre.

    Meet Anthony!

Here at The Safety Centre we talk a lot about how amazing our volunteers are, so it is only fitting that we introduce you to one – Say hello to Anthony, who has been part of The Safety Centre family for over 8 years.

    Safety Centre Hazard Alley Volunteering

He is a Milton Keynes resident who generously and wholeheartedly shares his time and wealth of experience with our visitors.

In 2014 Anthony’s wife, Frances, mentioned a poster she’d seen about safety for children and the rest as they say, is history. Anthony has volunteered at the Safety Centre for 8 years, and in the past year alone has volunteered over 150 hours of his time, teaching children, young people and adults life saving learning.

Anthony’s career as a chartered civil engineer included spending years in Saudi Arabia in challenging desert conditions. Back home, he was responsible for the design and construction of a section of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow. Then came along the EU requirement that UK road bridges must be strong enough to carry 44 tonne lorries. Anthony was in charge of the assessment/strengthening of bridges over the railway for Transport for London and LU. He has also given presentations at international conferences.

    Favourite Scenario

Anthony’s favourite scenario is the Coop, where we talk about core PSHE topics of living in the wider world. This scenario focuses on bullying, shoplifting and who you can turn to for help if you need it.

    Anthony said

‘If the children can remember one or two incidents and what to do, that’s great. Some children have never seen a phone box before and they’re amazed there’s a real person at the end of the phone. The centre is always moving with the times and developing to meet changing safety needs within our communities, like the development of the new knife crime scenario.’

In his spare time Anthony enjoys playing guitar with his church music group. He also enjoys sailing, gliding and karate. With lots of hobbies and experiences Anthony is always learning – from playing the violin, to scuba diving and flying and training young pilots there’s never a dull moment. He is also very dedicated to his two grandsons, who are his and Frances’s top priority.

So, what is Anthony’s advice to anyone thinking about volunteering?

I, as a volunteer, appreciate the training and encouragement the staff provide. Not all organisations offer the same level of support.

Come and have a taster and see what you think.  Its not for everyone but if you like it you’ll be hooked.

Community Action MK have Emergency First Aid Training at Safety Centre, Hazard Alley

First aid training is essential for all businesses, organisations and education providers to help manage potential risks and safeguarding people. Knowing how to perform just one first aid technique can make a huge difference when it comes to saving a person’s life.

At The Safety Centre,  we educate children, young people and adults so that they have the knowledge and skills to empower them to make safer choices. This week, we had the pleasure of teaching Community Action MK all of the necessary skills and knowledge required for emergency first aid situations.

Under the guidance of Carol, one of our incredible trainers, the team practised cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an AED on our laerdal resuscitation mannequins. They then moved on to practising the recovery position and dressing open wounds, using each other as casualties. With a hint of humour and a lots of great advice, the day was filled with engaged attendees who left the centre equipped with the necessary skills to help support their colleagues.

Josan Race, Community Development Manager from Community Action MK said

Company Hires Safety Centre For Scent Detection Training

The Safety Centre welcomed a different kind of visitor last night when PotterPaws hired the centre to run one of their scent detection trials.

Our immersive centre provided a great space for these highly intelligent dogs to practise their incredible sniffing skills in a realistic and safe environment. Whilst scents were being hidden all around our life-like scenarios, owners and their furry companions were able to relax in our briefing room, waiting for the moment they would be called to find the hidden scent. There was also the option for their four legged friends to be outside to spend some quality time on the grass by our centre.

This type of training provides owners and their dogs with happy and positive emotions. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that there were plenty of wagging tails full of anticipation and excitement….from the dogs, of course.

Overall, the evening was a huge success with everyone leaving satisfied, including staff 🙂

We pride ourselves on offering opportunities for interactive education experiences for all. When it comes to the centre, the possibilities are endless and are only limited by your imagination.

Why not get in touch and see what we could do for you?

We have a variety of spaces available for you to book. From our conference room and classroom to the centre itself there is something for everyone.

Our conference room and classroom are perfect spaces for any training or meetings you require but want to take place at a different location. Both come equipped with screens/TVs, chairs and tables.

Our centre is a fantastic space to host a variety of events. It is truly one of a kind and will certainly be an excellent icebreaker to any networking or training event you would like to run. Hiring this space will also give you access to our conference room and classroom. This means you will an additional two break out rooms for any activities you would like to run separately. For instance, a business could run their own team building day using our centre’s scenarios and also use our conference room to conduct any employee appraisals. One place, multiple uses, what is not to like?

Regardless of what you decide to hire, you will have the added knowledge that you will be supporting a magnificent charity that dedicates its time to teaching life-saving learning to everyone. Further information about centre hire can be found here.

The Safety Centre Charity Is Here For Your Life Saving Learning

The Safety Centre Charity was thrilled to educate over 14,000 children, young people and adults with life-saving learning since reopening after the pandemic. The charity based in Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes is the regions leading safety education charity. The Safety Centre education team are ready and excited to welcome students and visitors to their education centre Hazard Alley for the next academic year!

New Early Intervention Knife Crime Education Programme & Scenario

Last year the Safety Centre launched their new choices and consequences education scenario. This new scenario has children focus on their choices and the consequences of these choices in relation to littering, graffiti and knife crime, funded by Safer MK and MK Development Partnership. This alongside the brand new Choices and Consequences: Early Knife Crime Intervention classroom session, available for primary school children in year five and six, has been a really well received addition to our already life-saving curriculum.

We encourage schools to book our sessions early, so speak to our education team on 01908 263009 to book your year five and six students in school sessions for next academic year.

    Fantastic End Of Year Results!

Last academic year the Safety Centre Charity taught over 14,000 children, young people and adults life-saving education. This has either been through tours at our education centre, sessions in schools as part of our outreach programme or first aid and fire marshal training, which is available for both schools and companies to book.

Amy Lawrence, Bookings and Marketing Assistant at the Safety Centre Charity said

‘We believe that education empowers people to make safer choices and could not be happier with the way this first year back has gone. We cannot wait to see what the next year will bring.’

To find out more about visiting Hazard Alley, having a school outreach session, or training your employees with us head to our website for further details and how to book.

    Incredible Volunteers!

As always, our incredible guides are at the heart of our work at Hazard Alley, educating young people about staying safe in everyday situations. The amazing team dedicated over 2,600 hours last year to teaching life-saving education.

The Safety Centre is always looking for more volunteers to join their amazing team! If you have 2.5 hours free in your week, why not volunteer with us and save a child’s life? Full training given and travel expenses paid. Contact us on 01908 263009 or email volunteerguides@safetycentre.co.uk to find out more. We would love to hear from you!

Hazard Alley are delighted to announce that our new scenario is up and running.

Last year, the Safety Centre were awarded funding by MK Council and the Safer MK Partnership. This was to create a new learning zone that focused on the risks and consequences related to knife crime.

After many months of hard work, the new scenario is finished and a great new addition to our Hazard Alley tour. Children really enjoy using the clikapads to make their decisions when faced with challenging scenarios.

The content covered is age appropriate, with years 2-4 focusing on choices and consequences related to littering and graffiti, whilst years 5 and 6 focus on the choices and consequences related to knife crime.

We are very pleased to see the positive impact this is already having on the school children that visit us. It is another fantastic scenario, providing children with the opportunity to gain essential knowledge that will empower them to make safer choices.

Safety Centre (Hazard Alley) are excited to announce that we are now running blended learning first aid courses!

Having qualified first aiders is essential for any business. However, restrictions and concerns surrounding COVID19 has meant that training providers, like ourselves, have had to alter the way our courses are run.

As a result, changes have been made to our approved First Aid at Work and 12 hour Paediatric First Aid, so that part of the training is now remote online learning. Therefore, attendees will not be required to be at the centre for the first day of their training.

By turning our courses into blended learning packages, we reduce the amount of time people spend mixing with others at our centre. Not only this, the online section of our course is flexible. This means that attendees can complete the modules at times that suit them and their needs.

The practical sections of the training will be held at our centre with one of our amazing trainers. They will teach you all of the necessary skills to become a proficient first aider.

If you would be interested in booking a place on one of these courses, please head to our “contact” page.

We hope to welcome you soon.

The Safety Centre would like to say a big ‘Thank You!’ to the Milton Keynes Development Partnership (MKDP), for their generous grant of £9,800 towards the completion of our new scenario.

This funding, in addition to the support we have received from other organisations, has provided us with the ability to create an engaging scenario that is full of impact.

The new scenario will support the vital educational programme we are creating around knife crime. As a result, it will enable children to develop knowledge, skills and build their resilience. It will help them to make the right choices and enjoy their childhood safely.

As a safety education charity, we understand the importance of educating children about the risks they face today, which is why we are so grateful to all who have been involved in the development of our new scenario. We would not have been able to achieve this without you.

    Thank You!

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a freelance educator and help us to deliver our school liaison programme.

We are looking for educators to work with us on a freelance basis. Can you deliver engaging sessions that teach children how to stay virtually safe or physically safe when out and about?

We teach sessions out in primary schools on themes such as online safety, knife crime, carbon monoxide and gas safety. We also teach sessions in the centre and have some evening opportunities to co-deliver parents briefing sessions too. Our main audience is children aged 6 to 12 in schools across Milton Keynes and beyond.

In the current situation we’re also exploring virtual delivery using video conferencing platforms so you could get the chance to further develop your teaching skills.

You can find out more about what we’re looking for, how to apply and details of the programme we deliver.

Please use the enquiry form to get in touch if you would like to chat about the opportunity before you apply? We look forward to hearing from you!

We are looking for an influential and inspirational Chief Executive to lead the Safety Centre, best known as Hazard Alley, from the early Autumn.

After 25 years of safety education to over 500,000 children, there is great local awareness of, and affection for, Hazard Alley. Around 14,000 young people usually visit the centre each year, a further 2500 taught out in schools, around 650 people are trained in first aid and we generate an annual revenue in excess of £250k. We won two business awards in 2020.

The CEO must lead and manage all aspects of the charity working with Trustees to develop long-term strategic direction and a three-year business plan to develop new and financially sustainable ways of providing safety education, building on the grant funding and business support we already enjoy. The Centre has 6 staff plus about 40 volunteers.

If you have bags of enthusiasm and an understanding of how to develop a regional social enterprise, we would love to hear from you. You can read the chair of trustee’s welcome letter and find more details about the role and how to apply.

Closing date: 11th September 2020 at 5pm (not 31st August 2020 as on the details)

Saturday February 22nd seems such an age ago now!

Six teams of swimmers met at Wovlerton Pool to swim in the annual Rotary Club of Milton Keynes Swimathon event. 36 swimmers were sponsored to swim lengths of the pool in relay for 55 minutes to raise money for Hazard Alley. Our efforts resulted in a donation of £7000.Well needed funds at the present time when we can’t host visits to the centre or run H&S training courses.

A massive thank you to all of our volunteers, friends, trustees and staff who swam and supported the teams on the day. Thanks as well to the Rotary Club for organising this annual fundraiser for local charities.
