Family Tours of Hazard Alley Are Back!

Here at The Safety Centre, we are all about empowering people through the life-saving safety skills and knowledge that we share on our tours. We are delighted to announce that Family Tours are back during this October Half Term!

We are thrilled to be opening our doors once again, to welcome families to Hazard Alley to enjoy our fun and interactive educational tours which will take place on Monday 28th and Wednesday 30th October. Book your tickets here. To avoid disappointment, please book your tickets early for the chance to experience our famous Hazard Alley Tour!

** If you would like to come in a group please make one booking so that we can keep you together for your tour.**

Family Tours At The Safety Centre

Just like our school visits, you will be guided around each of our safety scenarios by one of our friendly volunteer guides. You will learn about the risks and potential dangers we face in every day life and the things you can do to keep yourself and your friends, family and community safe.

From understanding the importance of smoke detectors and keeping your personal information safe to learning how to cross the road safely and how fast a train can travel, there will be lots for you to discover.

Children will also get the incredible opportunity to make a practise 999 emergency phone call. During this call, they will need to remember what emergency service their require, where the accident has taken place and what has happened. An amazing skill that could save a life in a real emergency.

Is there any better place to visit during half term?

We recently learnt about Adam’s story after his mum, Helen, got in touch with us. 14 year old Adam visited the Safety Centre when he was in KS 2 and has just started year 10 this September.

Helen told us how her mum was driving Adam and his younger sister in her car at the end of the summer holidays when they were in a car accident. Adam’s nan wasn’t able to get out of the car due to the impact of the accident.

    Helen said

Adam remained calm, kept everyone else calm and called the emergency services. He said he knew exactly what to do from his trip to Hazard Alley all those years ago – so I wanted to say thank you to your team and to let you know the impact a visit to you has even years later.

My 12 year old daughter… didn’t know how to respond to the situation because she didn’t get a trip to Hazard Alley due to the pandemic.

Everyone was ok, a few bruises and shaken up. The car is not so good and will most likely be written off. Tell your team to keep doing what you do because it definitely has an impact.

Adam’s story highlights the long term impact of the safety education we deliver here at our education centre Hazard Alley and out into schools across the region. We know that learning through doing is the best way to absorb life skills so we know what to do when situations arise. Every time a visitor makes a practice 999 call at Hazard Alley they’re preparing themselves for real life situations when they urgently need help. As Helen said, giving the confidence to know what to do and how to get help.

Sarah Surridge, Marketing and Communications Manager at the Safety Centre said

Hearing Adam’s story reminds us of the importance of our work here at the Safety Centre charity. From visits to our education centre Hazard Alley to our sessions out in schools across the region there is so much to share with our young people about safety education that can help them in real life emergency situations and day to day life. We were pleased to learn that Adam’s visit gave him the skills and confidence to get the emergency help he needed after the car crash and that everyone was ok. If you’re reading this and think to yourself ‘my class needs this safety education’ please get in touch, we are here to help.

Book your next visit to our education centre Hazard Alley today by clicking here or invite our education team into your school to teach about a range of safety education topics by emailing educationteam@safetycentre.co.uk or calling 01908 263009.

Water safety education has been added into the national curriculum for primary students following the campaign of Beckie Ramsay whose son Dylan drowned from cold water shock in 2011

Beckie Ramsay whose son Dylan drowned aged 13 from cold water shock has called the national network of Safety Centres teaching about water safety ‘essential for all young people to visit.’ Dylan drowned at Hill Top Quarry in Whittle-le-Woods, near Chorley, after getting into difficulty in the water when he was swimming with friends. The Safety Centre Alliance, a network of safety education charities across the country teach children and young people how to stay safe in daily life- including around the water. Beckie has been campaigning since Dylan’s death 12 years ago for water safety to be included in the national curriculum which has now been updated to teach about the dangers of the water.

The Safety Centre Alliance was created to unite safety education charities across the country, delivering interactive, immersive safety education for children, young people and adults. The first charity was created in 1994 and the network inspires others from across the globe to spread safety education. Covering everyday safety topics from online safety, what to do in a house fire, crossing the road safely, water safety, how to call 999, first aid, the choices and consequences of knife crime, home safety, bullying and shoplifting and in car safety- visitors get safety skills that stay with them for life.

    Beckie Ramsay, Dylan’s mum said

It’s truly amazing to finally see water safety being taken seriously over 12 years after losing my son Dylan to open water. As I’ve always said it is so important to learn about water safety, it’s as important as learning about the green cross code, stranger danger, fire and road safety. Learning could mean living! To know that many of these things and more are being taught under one roof at the Safety Centre and across the country through the Safety Centre Alliance is truly amazing. Had something like this been accessible to Dylan then just maybe my son would still be with us- about to celebrate his 26th birthday (17/10/2023) instead we will buy flowers and remember the good times. It’s essential for all young people to have this safety education.

Maya Joseph Hussain Chair of the Safety Centre Alliance and CEO of the Safety Centre based in Milton Keynes said

Beckie tragically has first-hand experience of what happens when our young people haven’t received key safety messages about the water. Cold water shock, rip tides and underwater currents are life threatening.  The Safety Centre Alliance works tirelessly to ensure visitors to our education centres are aware of the dangers of the water all year round and what to do in an emergency.

Lives are being lost due to a lack of understanding about the dangers of the water- however beautiful the water looks- if you don’t have the knowledge about how to float, what to look out for or where its safe to swim, you could drown. The reality is specialist recovery teams are unlikely to make it in time if you get into difficulty in un-lifeguarded bodies of water before you drown. Others may enter the water to help you but they could drown too. We advise everyone to swim where there are lifeguards- at the beach or in the pool. No family wants to experience the horrific impact of losing a child like Beckie and the Alliance is doing all we can to stop this from happening.

  • New Roadworks Safety Scenario Launched

This week is the official launch of our latest roadworks safety scenario at our education centre Hazard Alley. The scenario developed in partnership with Ringway– the highway maintenance strategic service partner for Milton Keynes City Council.

The new scenario gives visitors the opportunity to discover the potential dangers of roadworks: how to keep safe by understanding site hazards; and the importance of following site rules like designated pedestrian routes and safe crossing locations. It includes an interactive quiz and for a fully immersive experience visitors get to wear Personal Protective Equipment.

The Roadworks Safety Scenario launches this month to join our education centre’s lifesaving learning programme including first aid, safe places to cross, shoplifting and bullying, fire safety, home safety, the choices and consequences of knife crime, in car, cycling and railway safety as well as water safety. The education centre is designed for primary school children and young people to learn how to keep themselves and others safe in daily life.

Clive Rillstone, Ringway Regional Director said-

“Our team are passionate about raising the positive profile of the highways industry, particularly the safety of both road users and site staff, and we were excited to have the opportunity to develop the scenario at Hazard Alley. We feel that our scenario makes a perfect addition to the aims of the Safety Centre with reference to road works and safe crossing.”

Maya Joseph-Hussain CEO of the Safety Centre said

“We’re thrilled to be launching our new innovative roadwork safety scenario that has been developed in partnership with our supporters Ringway. The scenario adds value to our pioneering safety education centre Hazard Alley, where children, young people and adults across the region have the opportunity to learn lifesaving safety education in a safe, immersive way”.

With thousands of visitors per year visiting Hazard Alley, Ringway will continue to work with the team at the Safety Centre to ensure that this initiative is an effective way to understand site safety.

Schools and uniformed groups can see this new scenario by booking to visit Hazard Alley here. Sessions start at £7.50 + VAT per student. Book your session here today.

We’re Thrilled To Announce George Anson As Patron At The Safety Centre-Supporting Our Work To Keep Our Communities Safe

We’re excited to introduce our Patron, George Anson, at a key time for the Safety Centre as we expand our essential safety education work across the region and beyond. George will help support the development of our charity as we move into our 30th year of operation, helping save lives through learning for children, young people and adults. During his time as High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire between 2021 and 2022 George campaigned to educate people on the risks they face online and how they can make themselves safer. His focus for his shrivel year was highlighting the impact of cyber-crime on the population. These interests align perfectly with the aims of the Safety Centre.

    George said

In our ever-changing and increasingly complex world, how to be “safe” has never been more important to our children and young people. For nearly 30 years, the Safety Centre has been delivering this message effectively to that next generation. My role is to see that the Safety Centre continues to grow, prosper, and reach the widest audience possible. The only thing holding back the Safety Centre’s ambitions is funding. Everyone can help, whether you are an individual, organisation or business, by giving generously to make our world safer for the future.

    Safety Centre Patron George Anson

Maya Chief Executive at the Safety Centre said

I’m delighted to announce George Anson as our new Patron. He will be our first Patron here at the Safety Centre and joins us at a pivotal, exciting time for our organisation as we grow and develop our safety education programmes and relationships across the region to deliver lifesaving learning. George’s time as High Sheriff highlighted his passion for helping people stay safe online and this aligns directly with our goal to educate children, young people and adults about how to keep safe. With a shared commitment to empowering our communities to stay safe, I look forward to working with George to ensure even more people are benefitting from our vital education programmes.

The tragic death of 16-year-old Jake Norman who recently died on the railway in Portsmouth highlights the need for the Safety Centre’s lifesaving railway safety education. Whilst the British Transport Police are still working to establish the circumstances of Jake’s death and why he was accessing the railway line, Jake’s family have said they would like to raise awareness of the dangers of the railway tracks through the tragic incident.

The Safety Centre is the world’s first safety education charity, teaching lifesaving learning to children, young people and adults to create safe, flourishing communities. The charity focuses on early intervention and prevention safety education, teaching the skills needed to be safe in daily life.

Maya Joseph-Hussain Chief Executive at the Safety Centre said,

‘We were saddened to hear of the tragic death of Jake Norman and our thoughts are with his family, friends and community at this difficult time. Jake’s death emphasises the importance of our railway safety education work here at the Safety Centre. Our immersive education centre Hazard Alley teaches visitors about the dangers you come across when using the railways and how you can use the railways safely. This education work is essential to keep our communities safe as they go about their daily life, today and in the future.’

The Safety Centre offers immersive education safety tours and classroom sessions at our education centre Hazard Alley in Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes, as well as outreach education in schools for students, teachers and parents. We provide high quality interactive, immersive, experiential, and memorable safety education and training to children, young people and adults across the region.

Established in 1992 and opened in 1994 the Safety Centre is the region’s leading and the world’s first interactive, immersive, and memorable safety education charity. Specialising in teaching children, young people and adults about how to stay safe, understand risks and avoid accidents using realistic learning experiences. Merry Christmas from all of us here at the Safety Centre. We hope that you have a wonderful festive period and a happy and safe new year.

This year has been full of action for the whole Safety Centre team, from increased visitor numbers at our education centre Hazard Alley to new projects. We’ve been thrilled to welcome students from across the region to our education centre as schools get back out for school trips and were so pleased to be featured in the winter edition of the School Travel Organiser Magazine. We also welcomed Dr Stuart Lawrence to the centre in November to talk about the importance of our knife crime education work and how we can save lives through education.

    Stuart Lawrence Safety Centre

Our education team have been busy delivering early intervention knife crime education to 1,500 students across Milton Keynes this December during the month of action whilst the Knife Angel is in the city. This exciting project will continue in the new year as our education teams travel onto Slough to deliver education to 1,950 children.

Safety Centre Knife Crime Education Pledge

In December we’ve celebrated all things Christmas, thanking our volunteers for their amazing work, with our volunteer Christmas party. As well as our Christmas staff day out wreath making. We made the centre Christmas ready and had a visit from cheeky elves, who needed lots of safety education!

    Safety Centre Volunteers Christmas Party

Thank you to everyone who has supported our work, helping make communities across our region safer through lifesaving learning. It’s never too late to learn something new and keep yourself, your friends and family and community safe. We’re here to help support you every step of the way. You can reach us at bookings@safetycentre.co.uk. Our offices will be closed for the Christmas break from 4.30pm on Wednesday 21st December and will reopen at 8.30am on Tuesday 3rd January 2023.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at the Safety Centre.

Halloween Safety – Celebrate The Spooky Season Safely

There is no better way to end the month of October than by celebrating Halloween.

Inspired by the upcoming spooky spectacle, we’re talking about Halloween Safety in what we are calling #BeSeenOnHalloween!

Whether you are hoping to receive tricks or treats, we want to give you some great tips for making sure you can celebrate Halloween safely.

    Carving Pumpkins

October marks the season for carving pumpkins into spooky faces or works of art. It’s a truly messy activity full of fun that can be enjoyed by everyone. We certainly enjoy it here at The Safety Centre. However, it is important to make sure that we stay safe whilst we are doing this.

Make sure you when you are carving you:

    • Are in an area that is well lit. You need to be able to see everything clearly, especially if you are planning to use a knife to do all of the carving.
    • Make sure all of your tools, pumpkin and hands are kept dry. Carving pumpkins is a messy business and can make surfaces slippery, increasing the risk of you cutting or injuring yourself.
    • Keep sharp objects out of reach and out of sight of children. If you are allowing them the carve the pumpkin, make sure you supervise them at all times.
    • Consider using a pumpkin carving kit. These kits are designed to be used to carve pumpkins and are much easier to use than sharp knives.

    Treat Candles With Care

Candles are popular when celebrating Halloween, often being used in pumpkins to give them a spooky glow.

However, it is important to remember that candles can be dangerous, especially when left unattended. The flickering flame can get into all kinds of mischief, leading to the possibility of fires starting, or serious burns like the ones experienced by Claudia Winkleman’s daughter.

If you are planning on using candles, please make sure you:

    • Put the flame out before leaving the room.
    • Never leave them within reach of small children or animals. A small bump is all it takes to lead to a nasty accident occurring, especially since many costumes are considered toys and aren’t flame retardant.
    • Keep candles away from curtains or decorations. Make sure you do the same for any decorations you have outside as a gust of wind can make a small flame much bigger.
    • Consider using LED candles as a great alternative that can be left unattended. However, please still make sure that these are out of reach and sight of children and animals.

    Going Out Trick Or Treating

One of the best parts about Halloween is the large amount of sweets you get from trick or treating!

However, let’s not forget that the majority of trick or treating is done when it is dark. A dark night may be a great time for Halloween, but not for being seen. At The Safety Centre, we always say that it is not easy to see everyone when it gets darker, especially if they are wearing dark clothes. It is important to remember that drivers will still be using the roads and may not be able to see you, which can be dangerous. #BeSeenOnHalloween!

To avoid any accidents, make sure you either wear or have something bright on you to make it easier for them to spot you, such as a reflective coat, armband or flashing lights.

If you are planning to let your children go out with their friends without you, just remember to tell them to:

    • Stick to routes that are familiar to them.
    • Tell you:

    Where they are going

    Who they are going with

What time they will be back

If these change at any point during the night, make sure you ask them to update you as soon as they can.

Family Tours This October Half Term!

We’re delighted to share that we will be running family tours this October half term!

Tours will take place on Monday 24th, Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th October.

We are very excited to be opening our doors this October half term for our family tours! Families to visit our interactive education centre and experience our famous Hazard Alley Tour.

At the Safety Centre, we are all about empowering people through the life-saving safety skills and knowledge we share on our tours.

October half term is sure to be a treat now that you can book your visit to Safety Centre, Hazard Alley!

*All of our tours have now been fully booked* We look forward to welcoming everyone next week.

Children will also get the incredible opportunity to make a practise 999. During this call they will need to remember what emergency service their require, where the accident has taken place and what has happened. An amazing skill that could save a life in a real emergency.

Is there any better place to visit during half term?

    Details and FAQs

Family tours are for children aged 6- 11 years old and their responsible adult aged 18 or over. Children must be accompanied by an adult for their tour of the centre.

We will have tickets available on:

Who is this tour for? Tours are for children aged between 6 years to 11 years and their responsible adult aged 18 or over who must accompany them during their tour. Adults are not able to attend the tours on their own without a child.

Can we buy tickets for younger siblings? Unfortunately our centre does not have facilities for children under 6 years old or babies/toddlers. Our tours are designed for primary aged children in years 2-6 (aged 6-11) and our safety scenarios are not suitable for younger children.

Cycle To School Safely This Week By Checking Out Our Top Tips!

Cycle to School week is the perfect time to get out your bike and try a new way of getting to school or work. We know that travelling by bike is a great way to be healthy and reduce the number of cars on our roads, helping to reduce the impact we have on global warming.

However, it can be very daunting for us to make the step to do this, especially if we are close to busy roads. In Milton Keynes, we are fortunate enough to have redways that we can use when we are cycling, but it is important to recognise that not every place has them and they might not be near where we need to travel.

With this in mind you may feel that it is easier to use the car instead, but don’t let this stop you from making a healthier choice. Our top tips below are here to help empower you with the knowledge to feel confident to cycle safely.

Safety Centre’s Top Tips For Cycling Safely

    Do A Bike Safety Check

How do we know our bikes are safe for us to ride? It might not seem like much, but doing these simple checks beforehand ensures that you are staying safe, even before your journey has started.

    1. How are my tyres? Check each tyre for for any punctures, gashes or debris that might be stuck in them. If this all seems ok check your tyre pressure.
    2. How are my brakes? Check your brake pads, have they worn away?
    3. How are my wheels? What happens to your wheels if you spin them? Are they ok or can you see them sticking?

For a more in-depth cycle safety check, Cyclescheme have a useful breakdown of what to look for. The best part is it only takes 2 minutes.

    Wear The Right Cycle Clothing

A great fitting cycle helmet and bright clothing go hand in hand with cycling.

As we say at The Safety Centre, our head contains a very important brain, so we need to protect it. Wearing a cycle helmet does this, so it is essential that we have one. It is also important that we wear bright clothing. Staying bright means we can stay being seen and that is important when we are out and about on the roads, especially as we are approaching winter when the days start to get darker quicker.

    Plan Your Route!

It doesn’t matter if you are walking, cycling or using a scooter to get to school, planning your route is an essential step in ensuring you choose the safest route. Take a look at the redways (if you have them) that are closest to you and any road crossings that you might be able to use.

Get Around MK have a route planner that is really useful. As well as showing you how to get to your destination on a map, they also have a break down of directions that you can use to help identify the specific road names. They also have a map of all the redways in the area.

Remember, it never hurts to plan more than one route just in case your usual route is blocked off.

    Know Your Hand Signals!

It is really important to communicate with other road users when you are out and about on your bike. You may have seen many cyclists stretch out their arms to the side to indicate to other that they are turning. However, there are many other signals out there to let other vehicles know if you are slowing down or stopping.

Road Cycling UK have a handy guide that you can use.

    Have Some Bikeability Training

If you are still a little nervous, you can always opt for some bikeability training. This can help to build your skills, knowledge and confidence on roads when you are out and about on your bicycle. They have a variety of courses you can choose, from the level 1 basics to the more advanced cycle skills of level 3.

Company Hires Safety Centre For Scent Detection Training

The Safety Centre welcomed a different kind of visitor last night when PotterPaws hired the centre to run one of their scent detection trials.

Our immersive centre provided a great space for these highly intelligent dogs to practise their incredible sniffing skills in a realistic and safe environment. Whilst scents were being hidden all around our life-like scenarios, owners and their furry companions were able to relax in our briefing room, waiting for the moment they would be called to find the hidden scent. There was also the option for their four legged friends to be outside to spend some quality time on the grass by our centre.

This type of training provides owners and their dogs with happy and positive emotions. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that there were plenty of wagging tails full of anticipation and excitement….from the dogs, of course.

Overall, the evening was a huge success with everyone leaving satisfied, including staff 🙂

We pride ourselves on offering opportunities for interactive education experiences for all. When it comes to the centre, the possibilities are endless and are only limited by your imagination.

Why not get in touch and see what we could do for you?

    Back To School Safety

We’re talking about back to school safety this week, as children and families prepare to go back to school.

Whether you are starting somewhere new or returning for another year, our top safety tips and advice are there to help support you as you kick start the new academic year.

    Walking To School

Our roads may be safer than they were a few years ago, but it doesn’t change how important it is to learn about road safety, especially when we are walking to school for the first time by ourselves.

The latest changes to the Highway Code make pedestrians a priority at crossings, including junctions, before cyclists, horse riders and cars. However, as we always say at the Safety Centre, even if we are being safe, it does not mean that everyone around us is being safe. Accidents can still happen, and according to RoSPA, 39 fatal accidents on the road in 2019 were children aged 15 and under.

So, if you are planning to walk to school make sure to:

    Plan Your Route To School

Planning your route is a great way of finding the quickest and safest way to school. You can locate where the road crossings are, as well as avoid the places that you shouldn’t cross. Once you have planned your route, we also recommend that you practise it with a parent or carer. This can help you feel more confident and avoid making unsafe decisions.

Look For Multiple Ways To Get To School

Sometimes, the route we would normally take might be cut off due to road repairs or even accidents. In cases such as this, we would have to find an alternative path to get to school. Unexpected events like this can cause us to feel worried or stressed, which may lead to us making unsafe decisions. By practising multiple routes, you will always have another option.

    Stay Bright, Stay Seen

Wearing bright clothing makes it easier for all road users to see you, especially when you are walking home after school. Whilst school uniforms are usually dark in colour, there are other bright things we could wear, such as a coat or bag.  You can add bright accessories, such as a reflective keyring or strap to your bag. It might not seem like much, but this can make all the difference.

    Be Free From Distractions

In order to cross the road safely, we need to use our eyes and ears. If we are too busy looking at our phones or listening to music, we may miss oncoming danger. Stay free from distractions and get to school safely.

Safety Centre Hazard Alley Road Safety

    Create a Hand…..A Helping Hand

There can be times when you feel sad, worried or stressed about things that are happening at home or school. In times such as these it is important to tell someone.

At the Safety Centre, we call this the Helping Hand. Your thumb represents yourself, as there are times when we can fix the problem. However, if it is something we need help with, each finger on our hand represents a group of adults you could turn to.

Why not take the time to think about who you would include on your hand? If you aren’t too sure, why not check out some our examples below to help give you an idea.

    Index Finger

The index finger represents adults you would find at home. This could be your mum, dad or carer. You might even live with an adult brother or sister.

    Middle Finger

The middle finger refers to people in our wider family, such as our grandparents, uncles and aunties. This can also include any adult cousins that you are close to.

    Ring Finger

Your ring finger finger includes any adult you feel you can trust at school. It could be a teacher, teaching assistant, headteacher or lunchtime supervisor.

    Little Finger

The last, but certainly not least, little finger represents any other adults that you know. It could be your friend’s parents, a neighbour or activity leader.

If you are not able to reach anyone face to face, Childline is there online or on the phone, all day, everyday.

Remember, there is nothing so awful that you cannot talk to someone about it. If you feel that you are not being heard, keep trying until someone listens to you.

    The Power Of Saying No

No might seem like an easy word to say but we don’t always feel like we can, especially when it comes to our friends.

Friendships are really important to us and it is only natural that we want to fit in, but it is also important to recognise when this might lead to unsafe choices and negative consequences.

We may not realise it but our friends can influence us, shaping the way we behave and make decisions. Changing the way we think, feel or act in order to fit in with or make a person or group of people happy is known as peer pressure. This isn’t always bad as they could help to change your view of a situation to make it more positive, but there are occasions when it can be.

When we are in situations where friends are encouraging us to do something that makes us uncomfortable or that we know is wrong, it can be difficult to know what to do. Especially if the rest of your friends are doing it. You may feel worried that by not joining in you might loose your friends or be the target for bullying. These feelings are very common, but there are steps you can take to help you. Remember, it is never ok to fit in with people at the expense of harming yourself or others.

Think! Is The Choice I’m About To Make Right Or Wrong?

There will be times when this is more obvious than others, but that won’t make it any less difficult. Our bodies are often very helpful in these situations with sending out early warning signs, such as an increased heart beat, shaking and feeling sick. These appear when we are scared or nervous and are there to tell us that the situation we are in might not be safe.

We can also ask ourselves how this choice will affect:

    • Ourselves
    • Our future
    • Our family
    • The people around us
    • Our community

If any of the above would be affected in a negative way due to a choice that we would make, it can help to give us the confidence to say No.

    Walk Away

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is walk away from the situation. It is easier if others join you, but don’t let this stop you if they don’t.

    Use Your Helping Hand

Think about the people you could tell. They will be able to help you make the right decision, or open up a safe space for you to relay your concerns with your friends.
