Celebrating Our Volunteers

It’s Volunteers Week and we’re celebrating our volunteers and everything they do for us here at our education centre Hazard Alley to bring safety education to life!

2023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week and we’re joining thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK. With this year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ we hope to encourage people to be the change that we want to see and get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them. The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering, so taking the time during Volunteers’ Week to celebrate their efforts and all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector and society as a whole has never been more important.

We’ve been speaking with our volunteers to find out more about why they volunteer with us and why it matters to them. Volunteers at the Safety Centre support our work by helping deliver our safety education tours in Hazard Alley as well as answering the telephone for our 999 emergency practice calls.

Meet Our Volunteer Johnathan

This is Johnathan, he’s our Volunteer Rep and he represents the volunteers here at the Safety Centre. He tells us a bit more about why he volunteers and what it means to him:

Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Jonathan Needham. I was born in the Midlands, moving to Milton Keynes in 1971. After leaving school I did an apprenticeship as an electrician for five years and then worked on the railway for 30 years in various roles before I retired. My interests outside of volunteering are fishing, playing outdoor bowls, pool and more recently gardening.

What brought you to The Safety Centre?

My youngest daughter sadly died suddenly in June 2014, I had already retired from work but my wife was still working. She wanted me to have something more to do during the day when a work colleague of hers who was already a volunteer at the Centre suggested I come and see if volunteering at the centre would be something I was interested in, especially with my knowledge of railway safety.

I was invited to do a tour and this really helped me decide to give volunteering at The safety Centre a try, the rest as they say is history!

How long have you been volunteering at The Safety Centre?

I started volunteering in November 2014 (eight and a half years now) and soon became the go to person for various DIY jobs with my friend Colin who has recently returned as a Telephone Guide.

What drew you to applying for the Volunteer Representative Role?

I feel I have now gained enough experience as a volunteer to be able to advise/mentor other guides and new volunteers. I am hoping that they feel they can approach me about any issues or concerns they have.
I also feel I can confidently help in promoting the good work The Safety centre does in various ways as required.

Do you feel volunteering at The Safety Centre is a rewarding experience?

I find my volunteering has become a rewarding experience. Each group I take round can have different challenges but seeing the looks on the faces of children as they go round the centre, telling you they have enjoyed one particular thing or the whole tour or that it’s the best trip ever is priceless.

Meet Our Volunteer Coordinator Tracy

Tracy manages our volunteers and ensures they have everything they need to help deliver our lifesaving learning here at our education centre Hazard Alley. She tells us about her role and why the volunteers are so special.

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Tracy and I am the Volunteer & Office Coordinator at The safety Centre (Hazard Alley). When I am not here I can usually be found either singing with my choir or in the stands of a football ground watching my son.

What is your Role?

My main role is to recruit, train and retain the Volunteers here at the safety Centre, but the role is so much more than that. The volunteers here are amazing! I get to spend time talking with them and generally just making sure they are alright. The volunteers love to come in early and sit and have a cuppa and a chat with each other and the camaraderie between them is lovely.

Do you feel volunteering at The Safety Centre is a rewarding experience?

Definitely, I have seen people flourish here at The Safety Centre. The confidence that it gives you and the interaction with the children is extremely rewarding. It also has a very social element to it where you can always find someone to talk to or ask advice from.

Anything else you would like to add?

Hazard Alley Volunteers are amazing last month alone they gave 286 hours of their time to help educate young people on keeping themselves safe. I am extremely fortunate to be able to come in everyday and spend my time with such inspirational and dedicated volunteers.

Volunteers Treated To Wonderful Thank You Lunch For Teaching Life-Saving Learning At Safety Centre

Volunteers for the Safety Centre were celebrated today for their dedication to teaching life-saving learning. Throughout the year, children, young people and adults have benefitted from their guidance and knowledge. They always leave our interactive centre educated, inspired and full of excitement, and that is all because of our incredible volunteers.

Our volunteers are at the heart of our work, as the world’s first and the regions leading safety education charity. Volunteers lead tours around our education centre Hazard Alley, which is visited every year by thousands of children, young people and adults from far and wide.

This last academic year alone, our guides volunteered over 2600 hours to teach life-saving skills and knowledge – a truly fantastic number for our first year back since COVID19.

We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this and our volunteers than by throwing a huge Thank You lunch, filled with tasty treats and fun party games. It was a great day with the same buzz of excitement we hear from everyone who visits our fantastic centre.

Meet Anthony!

Here at The Safety Centre we talk a lot about how amazing our volunteers are, so it is only fitting that we introduce you to one – Say hello to Anthony, who has been part of The Safety Centre family for over 8 years.

He is a Milton Keynes resident who generously and wholeheartedly shares his time and wealth of experience with our visitors.

In 2014 Anthony’s wife, Frances, mentioned a poster she’d seen about safety for children and the rest as they say, is history. Anthony has volunteered at the Safety Centre for 8 years, and in the past year alone has volunteered over 150 hours of his time, teaching children, young people and adults life saving learning.

Anthony’s career as a chartered civil engineer included spending years in Saudi Arabia in challenging desert conditions. Back home, he was responsible for the design and construction of a section of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow. Then came along the EU requirement that UK road bridges must be strong enough to carry 44 tonne lorries. Anthony was in charge of the assessment/strengthening of bridges over the railway for Transport for London and LU. He has also given presentations at international conferences.

Favourite Scenario

Anthony’s favourite scenario is the Coop, where we talk about core PSHE topics of living in the wider world. This scenario focuses on bullying, shoplifting and who you can turn to for help if you need it.

Anthony said

‘If the children can remember one or two incidents and what to do, that’s great. Some children have never seen a phone box before and they’re amazed there’s a real person at the end of the phone. The centre is always moving with the times and developing to meet changing safety needs within our communities, like the development of the new knife crime scenario.’

In his spare time Anthony enjoys playing guitar with his church music group. He also enjoys sailing, gliding and karate. With lots of hobbies and experiences Anthony is always learning – from playing the violin, to scuba diving and flying and training young pilots there’s never a dull moment. He is also very dedicated to his two grandsons, who are his and Frances’s top priority.

So, what is Anthony’s advice to anyone thinking about volunteering?

I, as a volunteer, appreciate the training and encouragement the staff provide. Not all organisations offer the same level of support.

Come and have a taster and see what you think. Its not for everyone but if you like it you’ll be hooked.

Safety Centre Volunteers- Volunteers Week 2022- Power Of Youth Day

This week is Volunteers Week and we’ve been speaking to some of our brilliant volunteers about how they got involved with the Safety Centre and what they enjoy about volunteering with us. Today is the Power Of Youth Day and we’ve had a chat with our newest volunteer 19 year old Chloë.

Chloë’s Story

Chloë started volunteering with the Safety Centre Charity in March this year, and has very recently qualified as a guide with us. With her full training now completed, Chloë takes school age children between year 2 and 6 around the centre’s 12 safety scenarios. When student’s visit our immersive learning centre Hazard Alley they learn about keeping safe in everyday situations, such as road safety, fire safety and water safety. Walking children through these scenarios Chloë teaches them how to stay safe, lessons they’ll hopefully remember for life.

Plans For The Future

Chloë is keen to have a career in early years education and is starting a three year Early Childhood Studies degree with the Open University in September this year. She previously started a course in Primary Education last academic year but decided to make a change as it wasn’t for her. Her volunteering role here at the Safety Centre will help her develop essential skills outside of the classroom.

Chloë said:

The children are much more animated here than when they’re sat in a classroom, its great to see a different side to them. You get to see more of their personalities and have fun whilst learning. I’ve always wanted to work with children and I’m hoping this will help me develop my CV and experience.

There’s a real element of learning through play when children come here, for example with the fire scenario. They see real smoke and have to run out and call for help at the phone box. I came here when I was younger and really enjoyed it. When I saw an advert for volunteers on the Do It website I thought, I’ll give it a go and its great. I’m one of the Green Shirts now (what the volunteers call themselves) and I love it! It’s very surreal to be showing groups around but I love using my own stories to bring situations to life. This opportunity has given me a much broader view of education.

Favourite Scenario

My favourite scenarios have to be the lake and house four said Chloe. There’s so much to talk about and see. It really opens up discussions with the children. They have really vivid imaginations and it gives you a different perspective on situations. They’re the most interesting people. Everyone calls me crazy for volunteering but I’m buzzing I love it.

Advice For Anyone Thinking of Volunteering With The Safety Centre?

Just do it and get stuck in. Its great, I’m already excited for the next time I come in! It’s a really flexible volunteering opportunity and it works around my commitments.

Safety Centre Volunteers- Volunteers Week 2022

This week is Volunteers Week and we’ve been speaking to some of our brilliant volunteers about how they got involved with the Safety Centre and what they enjoy about volunteering with us.

Iain’s Story

Iain has been a volunteer at the Safety Centre Charity for five years. Originally from Glasgow, Iain is now retired and lives in Milton Keynes with his wife. Following a career in electronics Iain now enjoys working with his community in Wolverton, woodwork and running when he’s not leading tours at the Safety Centre. Every week during term time we welcome school children to our immersive learning centre Hazard Alley, where Iain leads tours of children around our 12 safety scenarios. Here volunteers talk about the dangers of everyday situations and how we can keep ourselves safe. We asked Iain how he got involved with volunteering at the Safety Centre and he said:

I’d not long retired when I saw a stand outside of Tesco which said “Help Save Children”. At first I didn’t think it was for me but then I thought, no I’ve been looking for something to do, I’ll see what it’s all about. I’ve never looked back. I love the tours, they’re great fun. They keep me stimulated and get me out of the house. It’s been really good for my mental agility trying to remember students’ names and scenarios. Knowing that my work here helps kids to remember that, if nothing else, when they’re in trouble they need to find someone to help, is so important to me. As well as teaching children about the importance of crossing the road safely, as you only get one chance to do it right. It’s always fun with the kids, they keep you on your toes.

Best Safety Scenario

We asked Iain what his favourite safety scenario was and he said

Road safety is my favourite, because every year over 3,000 people are hurt or die crossing the road. Cars and road crossing can be very dangerous when things go wrong. Teaching children about these dangers is so important and giving them the tools to make decisions safely.

Iain said to anyone thinking about joining the volunteer team at the Safety Centre:

Do it. Its wonderful. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. It means so much to me. You can’t think of anything great on your own but when you’re part of a team things happen. Sharing real stories helps people learn and that’s what we do here.
