    Knife Crime Awareness Week

The 20th-26th May marks Knife Crime Awareness Week. We’re reminded of the horrific impact of knife crime far too regularly, hearing and seeing the devastating ripple effect knife crime has on families and communities. This is why we discuss early intervention and knife crime prevention with children aged 9 upwards to empower and educate them about knife crime. Our tailored, age-appropriate workshops are designed to help children understand the consequences of their choices, the impacts of their decisions and who they can talk to if they need help. Sessions are delivered in schools across the South East and at our education centre Hazard Alley.

    Knife Crime- The Facts

Latest statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that teenagers are over twice as likely to get stabbed compared to 10 years ago. On top of this, 82% of homicides with teenage victims have involved a knife or sharp instrument. This statistic accounts for 41% of all homicide victims. Knife Crime Awareness Week helps raise the public’s understanding about this critical issue impacting young people.

Research by ONS has also shown that knife crime offences have increased in the year of December 2023 by 7% in comparison to the previous year. Out of the recorded cases for 2023, a majority involved assault with the intent to cause harm, robbery and threats to kill. 78 young people under the age of 25 were murdered with a knife or sharp object in the 12 months to March 2023. 10 were under 16 years old. This is why lifesaving conversations have to start early, and we continue this work with young people across the South East and beyond.

    How Knife Crime Is Defined

Knife crime refers to any offence that involves a knife or sharp object that could potentially be used to cause harm to another individual. As knife crime includes a variety of different offences, it can have different penalties depending on other aspects of the crime.

Current UK laws have made it an offence to use any knife or weapon in a threatening way. It is also illegal to sell most knives or weapons to anyone under the age of 18 as well as to hire knives or other offensive weapons such as swords, knuckledusters and blowpipes. Under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019, it is illegal for adults to possess such weapons unless they are of historical importance, possessed on behalf of a museum or gallery, possession due to religious reasons or for activities such as sports, film and theatre or historical re-enactments. Under this law the maximum penalty for carrying a dangerous weapon is four years and an unlimited fine. However, if for example the knife was used with the intent of causing bodily harm, the sentence may vary.

Sentencing statistics by the Ministry of Justice shows that in the year ending March 2023, almost 18% of convictions for possession of a knife or offensive weapon were committed by young people (aged 10-17). 56% of these young people had their cases closed and were given community service.

    Why Do People Carry Knives

The College of Policing state that the reasons why people carry knives can be broadly explained by one of three reasons. These are outlined as:

    • Self-protection and fear
    • Self-presentation
    • To assist in other crimes (utility)

    Self-Protection And Fear

People carry knives in case they encounter violence and need to defend themselves. However, if someone is in a potentially violent situation, this can cause more harm as the presence of a weapon may unintentionally escalate matters. Others may view people who carry weapons as threatening, increasing the risk of them getting hurt either by other people or by someone using their own weapon against them. We break this common misconception that knives keep you safe in our early intervention and prevention knife crime education workshops. Highlighting to young people that if you carry a knife its more likely to be used against you.

    Self-Presentation

People carry knives in hopes that they will gain respect or street credibility from others for doing so. This can also include situations where an individual is in an environment where it is standard for people to carry a knife and they may feel the pressure to conform to that expectation. We talk about these pressures and where young people can go to for support if they are worried about knife crime.

    Utility

Knives are also carried for utility purposes where individuals will use the weapon to commit other crimes such as theft and assault. Unfortunately, this is one of the most common reasons why people carry knives, with over 40% of knife involved cases in the year ending December 2023 having been for assault with injury and the intent to cause harm.

    Early Intervention Prevention Education

As the data shows, young people are disproportionately affected by knife crime. That’s why our early intervention knife crime education is so vital. Here at the Safety Centre, we empower young people with the tools to keep themselves, their communities and their futures safe.

Following on from the horrific deaths of Ahmednur Nurr aged 16- brutally stabbed outside MK College, Dom Ansah and Ben Gillham-Rice both 17, killed with machetes at a house party and Jay Fathers 18 fatally stabbed at a New Years party, we developed a new safety education programme in 2021, responding to the need in our community to protect the futures of potential victims and perpetrators of knife crime.

Since 2021 we’ve educated over 14,500 children across primary and secondary schools across the South East. We were the lead education partner when the Knife Angel visited the Thames Valley working in partnership with Thames Valley Police and MK City Council, educating 3,500 children in our region.

How The Safety Centre Can Help

We encourage primary and secondary schools to contact us to book early intervention knife crime education workshops for their students from year 5 upwards now. Speak to the education team to find out more about the sessions and the benefits of welcoming external providers into school to deliver on this essential, complex topic, call 01908 263009 or email educationteam@safetycentre.co.uk. We are also running free virtual parent and carer workshops and encourage adults to join us to learn how to support their young people about knife crime.

Its devastating every time we hear of a loss of life due to knife crime and particularly when young people are the victims or perpetrators as we know the life long impact of being affected by knife crime.

Every death, attack and sentence for young people acts as a stark reminder for the need for lifesaving knife crime education for our children and young people. We are calling on businesses, funders, organisations and individuals to fund our lifesaving knife crime education workshops teaching young people about the dangers and life changing consequences of being involved in knife crime. Donations can be made online here or you can contact the Safety Centre team directly on 01908 714350.

We urgently need funding for our early intervention knife crime education work now. Our knife crime education workshops create safe spaces to speak with young people in an age-appropriate way to dispel myths and common misconceptions about carrying weapons and being involved in knife crime. There is no safe way to use, carry or participate in knife crime. Knives destroy lives for victims and perpetrators. We need funding for our knife crime workshops now to give children and young people the tools they need to make safe choices in the future. We are calling on all businesses, organisations, funders and individuals to fund this work and urge you to support us today to help keep our communities and young people safe.

When speaking with the Safety Centre Dr Stuart Lawrence, the younger brother of Stephen Lawrence who was violently murdered 30 years ago said ‘Early intervention is so important. Education can be the most powerful tool in the world and the earlier we can give people the tools to be safe, the more it helps. We need to explain to young people that time is precious, and life is precious. One fifth of knife crime is committed by 10–17-year-olds and there’s a lot more we can do early on to explain to children the importance of life and that there’s always an amicable way of solving things.’

The Safety Centre’s knife crime safety education workshops have been designed for primary and secondary school students from the age of 9 upwards and are being delivered in schools across the South East and beyond. Sessions are tailored to match the learning age of the students, creating safe spaces for lifesaving conversations about knives and weapons. Sessions have been delivered to over 14,500 students across the region in the past two years but this early intervention work must continue now to help students make safe choices when it comes to the dangerous issue of knife crime, reducing the impact of crime and vulnerability.

A donation of £10,000 would benefit over 1,400 children and young people. We are committed to ensuring we educate as many people as possible as the consequences of knife crime are devastating. Please support our vital safety education work today with a donation to our appeal. Collectively we can make a positive difference to the lives of our young people.

Donations can be made online here or you can contact the Safety Centre team directly on 01908 714350. Thank you for your support on this vital issue.

This week we spoke about our lifesaving knife crime education work with ITV news, talking about the importance of early intervention prevention education and how this must continue. Our CEO Maya Joseph-Hussain spoke with Rebecca Haworth from ITV news about our work and the role the Safety Centre plays helping create safer futures.

    Maya said

There’s a culture amongst our young people that its ok to be carrying a knife or a weapon, maybe they’re unaware of the risk to themselves and the wider community. We know that the issue of knife crime hasn’t gone away and we’ve got to keep tackling it together.

This month marks 30 years since the death of Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in a racist attack in London in 1993. In November 2022 Stephen Lawrence’s brother Dr Stuart Lawrence joined us at the Safety Centre to talk about the importance of our early intervention knife crime education programme to prevent future tragedies through learning. Our work here at the Safety Centre and across the region focuses on giving children, young people and adults the tools and knowledge to make safe choices and keep themselves, their communities and their futures’ safe. Our preventative education work helps build safe, flourishing communities today and tomorrow. However, this pioneering learning cannot carry on without the backing of funders and businesses to ensure the continued delivery of education sessions.

Dr Lawrence said during his speech at the Safety Centre

We never know when a young person we know or a young person someone else knows will be affected by knife crime. One fifth of all knife crime is committed between the ages of 11 and 17. That’s why early intervention is so important, if we can get out into our communities, speak to our young people and let them know the consequences of knife crime. Its not the consequences of today, not tomorrow, not a few weeks time but these things go on for years. (2023) will be 30 years since the death of Stephen and not a day goes past when I don’t think to myself (my son) is missing out on an uncle… on cousins that he could have had. And this is all through someone’s perception that the way to deal with things is through violence. We are only in control of ourselves, that’s all we can control. we can’t control anyone else, we can inform and we can try to educate, it comes down to each and every one of us making our own decisions, our own actions and holding ourselves responsible for them.

Safety Centre Knife Crime Education Stuart Lawrence

The Safety Centre’s Chief Executive Maya Joseph-Hussain said

In the past two years we’ve educated 14,500 9-11 year olds about the challenging topic of knife crime in an age appropriate, tailored way. We want to continue to empower more children and young people to make positive, safe choices and reduce the impact of crime and vulnerability. Collectively our research shows some young people say that they carry a knife for protection or to make them feel safer, even though they wouldn’t think of using it. However, research has shown that you’re actually more likely to become a victim of crime if you’re carrying a knife. The Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice report, ‘Knife Crime Intervention – what works?’ said that current research suggests that education-based interventions hold the most promise for effectively addressing knife crime. Our early intervention education is the solution and we are here to help with prevention work at an early age to help young people make safe, lifesaving choices. Businesses and individuals can help us with funding to continue this pioneering work that will save lives.

To support the Safety Centre continue this essential knife crime education work you can donate here or reach out to our team to talk about how you can support the Safety Centre on 01908 263009.

Stuart Lawrence Speaks At The Safety Centre About Empowering Children & Young People With Lifesaving Knife Crime Education

Today we were thrilled to welcome Dr Stuart Lawrence, the younger brother of Stephen Lawrence, to our centre today. He spoke about the vital importance of promoting early intervention knife crime education across the region and beyond through the Safety Centre Charity, the region’s leading and the world’s first safety education charity. Stuart shared his story, experiences and messages of hope and tolerance. We were also joined by Assistant Chief Constable Katy Barrow-Grint from Thames Valley police talking about knife crime and how Thames Valley police is preparing for the Knife Angel coming to Milton Keynes this December.

The Importance of Knife Crime Safety Education

We were excited to invite Dr Lawrence to talk with community leaders from across the region about the vital importance of early intervention knife crime education. Our role to support the development of flourishing communities within our region and beyond starts by responding to emerging safety trends. Unfortunately, knife crime is now an issue that children and young people need to be able to understand from an early age. This is why we’ve developed our early intervention knife crime safety education initiative in schools and at our education centre Hazard Alley. The programme talks about the choices young people have and the impact of these choices. Our education specialists create safe spaces for life saving conversations and education, in a meaningful, sensitive, age-appropriate way.

    Dr Lawrence said:

“Early intervention is so important, at the end of the day the only person you can control is you and you need to have the tools to make safe choices. Education can be the most powerful tool in the world and the earlier we can give people the tools to be safe, the more it helps. We need to explain to young people that time is precious, and life is precious. One fifth of knife crime is committed by 10-17 year olds and there’s a lot more we can do early on to explain to children the importance of life and that there’s always an amicable way of solving things.”

Assistant Chief Constable from Thames Valley Police Katy Barrow-Grint said:

“Seven out of the eleven murders in Thames Valley in the last year have come about because of a knife. I’m sure you’ll agree with me enough is enough. The preservation of life and working to address root causes and helping to save lives from being lost to violence but the wider impact in our communities and offenders themselves must be integral to everything we do as a partnership.”

Maya, Chief Executive of the Safety Centre said:

“We’re delighted to be joined by Dr Stuart Lawrence to talk about his experiences and the vital role the Safety Centre plays in educating children and young people through our early knife crime intervention programme. This education initiative can save lives through creating safe spaces for impactful immersive learning and vital conversations about the consequences of being involved in knife crime. Funded Early Intervention Knife Crime Sessions To Be Delivered To School Children In Buckinghamshire

We are delighted to announce that The Safety Centre has received funding to deliver Early Intervention Knife Crime outreach education sessions to Year 5 and 6 children in schools across Buckinghamshire!

The funding will help our brilliant education team to reach out to schools across Buckinghamshire and provide children with essential safety education around the complex topic of knife crime.

    Early Intervention Knife Crime Awareness

Tragically, recent news has highlighted the need for children to receive specialist education around the challenging topic of knife crime. The choice to carry a knife has life changing consequences that need to be highlighted, explored and explained in an age appropriate, sensitive way. Out highly qualified education team creates safe spaces for open conversations about a topic that can be very difficult to talk about.

Our session, which has been delivered across schools has received high praise for the way it addresses such a sensitive subject. Children are empowered by the session, giving them the confidence to make safe, positive decisions. They also feel reassured, knowing they have a support network they can reach out to if they need help.

Our mission at The Safety Centre Charity is for all children, young people and adults to have access to interactive, immersive and memorable safety education and training, enabling safe and flourishing communities. We are delighted that we are able to extend our reach further into Buckinghamshire through the help of this funding.

Sarah Surridge, Marketing Manager at the Safety Centre said

‘We’re thrilled to have received funding from The Heart of Bucks Community Foundation, enabling our education team to deliver life-saving early intervention knife crime education across Buckinghamshire. These sessions help young people make safe choices for themselves, their families and the communities they are living and growing up in. Having safe spaces to talk about these life changing decisions is essential as we support our communities to thrive through essential life-saving education.’

Funding Received From Heart Of Bucks

We are very grateful for the incredible support given by the Heart of Bucks Community Foundation.

The Heart of Bucks Community Foundation ensures their funds support individuals and organisations who will positively impact those in need across its county. Since it began in 2000, it has awarded over £10 million pounds to local causes.

Henry Allmand, CEO of the Heart Of Bucks Community Foundation said

‘We are delighted to fund the Safety Centre and the important work they are doing. The Knife Crime Early Intervention Sessions will protect our communities now and in the future. Together with Buckinghamshire Council, we are committed to providing vital funding towards community safety projects such as this, transforming Buckinghamshire for the better.’

Month Of Action Against Violent Crime In Milton Keynes Creates Early Intervention Knife Crime Education Opportunities With The Safety Centre Charity

This December there will be a month of action against violent crime in Milton Keynes, and the Safety Centre Charity, the region’s leading safety education charity, is thrilled to be supporting this initiative through their expertise in early intervention knife crime education. Thames Valley Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner have announced that the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression, known as the Knife Angel will be coming to Milton Keynes at the end of the year as part of a month of action against violent crime this December. Based at the Stadium MK the monument was created by the British Ironwork Centre and designed by sculptor Alfie Bradley, made of over 100,000 knives. The knives were collected through a nationwide knife amnesty supported by police forces across the country and the Home Office. The monument was created to highlight the impact of knife crime on people, families and communities.

Opportunities For Open Communications About The Choices And Consequences Of Knife Crime

The Knife Angel provides an opportunity for the people of Milton Keynes, and the city’s visitors from further afield to talk about knife crime and knives, why people carry them and the life changing impact they can have. The Safety Centre Charity, the world’s first safety education charity was created to teach children, young people and adults how to stay safe in daily life. The charity’s pioneering education programme has developed as the risks we face in daily life have evolved. Visits to their education centre Hazard Alley now include early intervention knife crime education as well as early intervention knife crime outreach sessions in schools across the region. The centre which is Learning Outside the Classroom certified, has an exceptional education team who are trained to talk about knife crime and the choices and consequences of carrying weapons in a safe, age appropriate way. The education team is looking forward to sharing their expertise during the month of action this December.

    Pioneering Safety Education

Sarah Surridge, Marketing and Communications Manager at the Safety Centre Charity said

‘As the world’s first safety education charity the Safety Centre are pioneers in safety education, including knife crime. As we adapt to the changing world we live in we’ve introduced early intervention knife crime education for all our year 5 and 6 visitors to our education centre in Kiln Farm Milton Keynes. This is in addition to our outreach programmes in schools delivering knife crime education to school students, talking about the choices young people have and the consequences of their choices, which are potentially far reaching and life changing. The Safety Centre is excited to be part of this important education opportunity with the Knife Angel coming to Milton Keynes and will be creating safe spaces for potentially life saving conversations about knife crime and it’s consequences. We look forward to working with Thames Valley Police, MK Council and MK Dons SET to deliver this vital education.’

The Safety Centre Charity Is Here For Your Life Saving Learning

The Safety Centre Charity was thrilled to educate over 14,000 children, young people and adults with life-saving learning since reopening after the pandemic. The charity based in Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes is the regions leading safety education charity. The Safety Centre education team are ready and excited to welcome students and visitors to their education centre Hazard Alley for the next academic year!

New Early Intervention Knife Crime Education Programme & Scenario

Last year the Safety Centre launched their new choices and consequences education scenario. This new scenario has children focus on their choices and the consequences of these choices in relation to littering, graffiti and knife crime, funded by Safer MK and MK Development Partnership. This alongside the brand new Choices and Consequences: Early Knife Crime Intervention classroom session, available for primary school children in year five and six, has been a really well received addition to our already life-saving curriculum.

We encourage schools to book our sessions early, so speak to our education team on 01908 263009 to book your year five and six students in school sessions for next academic year.

    Fantastic End Of Year Results!

Last academic year the Safety Centre Charity taught over 14,000 children, young people and adults life-saving education. This has either been through tours at our education centre, sessions in schools as part of our outreach programme or first aid and fire marshal training, which is available for both schools and companies to book.

Amy Lawrence, Bookings and Marketing Assistant at the Safety Centre Charity said

‘We believe that education empowers people to make safer choices and could not be happier with the way this first year back has gone. We cannot wait to see what the next year will bring.’

To find out more about visiting Hazard Alley, having a school outreach session, or training your employees with us head to our website for further details and how to book.

    Incredible Volunteers!

As always, our incredible guides are at the heart of our work at Hazard Alley, educating young people about staying safe in everyday situations. The amazing team dedicated over 2,600 hours last year to teaching life-saving education.

The Safety Centre is always looking for more volunteers to join their amazing team! If you have 2.5 hours free in your week, why not volunteer with us and save a child’s life? Full training given and travel expenses paid. Contact us on 01908 263009 or email volunteerguides@safetycentre.co.uk to find out more. We would love to hear from you!

The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire Debbie Brock attended a school knife crime prevention session this week delivered by the Safety Centre Charity. The session provided by the Safety Centre’s education team, taught year 6 students at Brooklands Farm School, Countess Way Campus about the dangers and consequences of carrying a knife.

Debbie Brock is Buckinghamshire’s High Sheriff, a post appointed by the Queen. She is one of 55 High Sheriff’s representing the Queen across the counties of England and Wales. She is keen to support initiatives that prevent crime and help build strong communities.

The Safety Centre Charity works closely with schools across our region. These vital relationships enable the charity to deliver early intervention knife crime sessions helping children and young people understand the impact of their decisions around carrying knives and weapons.

Debbie Brock, High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire said ‘I am so impressed by the session and the sensitive way Kathryn took the young people through the content. I was also really impressed by Brooklands Farm Primary School and their headteacher’.

Maya Joseph-Hussain, CEO of the Safety Centre Charity said ‘We’re so pleased to showcase our vital knife crime prevention school outreach sessions to the High Sheriff Debbie Brock this week. Our amazing education team have delivered over 130 knife crime sessions this past year to over 3700 students. I encourage schools across Milton Keynes and the wider region to book this ever popular and essential session for their students.’

Contact the Safety Centre today on 01908 263009 bookings@safetycentre.co.uk to arrange a knife crime prevention session in your school or to book your school’s next visit to Hazard Alley. It could save someone’s life.

    Amazing Donation

Milton Keynes company Personal Group‘s charitable trust has supported the Safety Centre Charity’s life saving work this week with an amazing £10,000. The company’s charitable trust has donated this money to deliver the Safety Centre’s in school knife crime prevention sessions to 1,200 year six students in our MK schools.  It will also support the Safety Centre Charity’s vital safety education delivered at their immersive education centre Hazard Alley.

    Donations Supporting Lifesaving Work

As knife crime continues to be a safety issue for our communities The Safety Centre team are passionate about delivering imaginative and engaging early intervention sessions. The in school sessions help young people understand the impact of their choices around carrying a knife. They also give young people a safe space to talk about what’s going on in their worlds and how their decisions around carrying a weapon can change their futures and the lives of their friends, families and communities.

The PACT Committee said ‘When we discussed the Safety Centre Charity’s Knife Crime Prevention Initiative it was a unanimous decision to take this forward.  As a local business, many of Personal Group’s staff are MK residents who are very aware of the challenges being faced currently. Bringing support and education to local students is key in helping to reverse this worrying trend and we are very pleased to be funding and working with the Safety Centre Charity and their immersive education centre Hazard Alley.’

Maya Joseph-Hussain, CEO of the Safety Centre Charity said ‘We’re thrilled to receive this donation from the Personal Group’s charitable trust. Donations like this help us support more children and young people across our region, delivering life saving learning. Every student receiving a session has the opportunity to talk about knife crime in a safe, supportive way, without judgement and with time for important discussions. Thank you to Personal Group’s charitable trust for supporting our life saving work.

We’re reaching out to our communities to ensure this lifesaving learning continues for generations to come. If your business would like to be part of this journey contact us to talk about you can help save lives across our region.’
